In this unit, you have learned a brief history about asbestos and lead uses in the United States, how to conduct a plumbing profile and asbestos survey, and the correct steps and procedures involved in lead remediation and an asbestos abatement project. Though lead was removed from water pipes in 1986, it still can be found in all homes built before 1990. Many people believe asbestos is no longer in our building materials. They just assume asbestos has been permanently banned within the United States; however, this is not the case. Asbestos is still used in many of our household products and still remains in many of our buildings. Due to the widespread use of lead and asbestos from 1800, they are still present in many of our homes, buildings, and schools. This two-part assignment will further explore this topic.

Congress has enacted several laws to detour products containing asbestos. The first was in 1973 with the Clean Air Act. In 1986, it was banned from schools; the ban was expanded in 1990. Then, in 2016, Congress again passed legislation, only to be struck down 3 years later. Why do you believe there has not been a complete ban on all products containing asbestos?
4.In your opinion, what are the benefits and drawbacks of reducing asbestos in our society?

Congress has enacted several laws to ban the use of lead. The first law was the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) in 1974, with subsequent amendments in 1986 and 1996. Then the Lead and Copper Rule of 1986 was enacted to ban the use of lead solder. Why do you believe there was not a big push to remove all lead piping or use other means to reduce lead exposure?
8.In your opinion, what are the benefits and drawbacks of reducing lead in our society?
