After COP26 in Glasgow (last November), it is even more apparent that governments will not solve this crisis themselves. We need all sectors of society to play major roles: businesses must innovate, governments must incentivize, and the people must keep up the pressure on both as consumers (citizens) and voters. Everyone accounted for, and everyone accountable.
The fashion industry set several climate-related commitments in response to COP 26. However many questions such as who how, and where still need to be addressed in order to overhaul fashion’s carbon-intensive supply chain and truly move the needle on sustainability. Fashion has been playing catch-up on sustainability, setting climate goals that regulators and customers increasingly want to see. Industry leaders also want to see fashion promoting sustainability as a cultural value and positioning it as a culture and lifestyle to be desired, not tacked on as an attribute for individual products. The UN Fashion Charter, renewed and updated during COP26, added a communications commitment for the first time, and for some, the implicit messages fashion disseminates are just as important as its explicit messaging.
