1. Choose and examine any three primary sources that your colleagues have posted on the new historical period that you have selected. You will thus be studying three documents not related to your original historical period.
2. Examine these new primary sources and read the interpretations made by your colleagues.
3. Write an essay of about 1000 words in which you do two things:
a. describe these three documents, offering your own interpretation of them; (Your focus here should not be an analysis of your colleagues’ interpretations; you should provide your own interpretation. Even if you happen to agree with your colleague’s interpretation, make sure that you describe the interpretation in your own words with your own evidence.)
b. compare what you have learned about happiness from your interpretation of these three new documents with what you had learned about happiness in your “original” period. That is, is happiness described or depicted in the same or in different ways in these two periods? What makes you think so?
As in your earlier essay assignment, make sure that your writing is as specific as it can be. Remember, as noted above, this is not about agreeing or disagreeing with other’s interpretations of primary sources. Rather, it is about carefully describing, analyzing, and offering your own interpretations and about describing the similarities and differences in how happiness is treated in these two historical periods. Such evidence—taken from the primary sources–could involve finding and examining a key term, phrase, image, or idea that is an important clue to your interpretation. Remember to provide your reasons for your interpretations and your conclusions.
Note: Of course, when you provide your interpretation of the three new documents and make your comparison between these documents and the primary documents you previously studied, you will not have the advantage of having studied the secondary sources relevant to the new historical period. This is fine! The key is that you look for ideas, images, feelings and glimpses of happiness in the new primary documents that are similar or different from what you found in the primary documents from your original historical period.
