Imagine walking into an early childhood setting. Are you able to get a sense of whether there is a positive culture and classroom community? Are children actively engaged in activities with each other? Can you observe interactions that show children caring for and respecting each other? Are the adults showing care and respect for the children and for each other? Do both children and adults seem to be enjoying themselves and comfortable in the environment? Can you tell whether families are an integral part of this environment?
When a positive classroom culture exists, children take risks, accept challenges, reach out to each other for help and to help, and express themselves in multiples ways. Such settings feel energetic and relaxed rather than frenetic and tense.
How can early childhood professionals foster and maintain these nurturing environments for healthy development and learning?
For this Discussion, you will share your insights after observing an early childhood setting, focusing on culture and community.
To Prepare:
Review the blogs of your peers from last week’s Assignment and reference at least 2 resources from their blogs for this week’s Discussion. In addition, spend at least 1–2 hours in an early childhood setting observing the environment with respect to understanding the culture and community of the setting. How do the adults interact with the children and each other? How do the children interact with each other? What evidence do you see that provides insights on the strengths and the challenges to cultivating and maintaining a positive classroom culture? How does what you observe compare with what you have been learning from the Learning Resources in this module? Conduct an interview with an early childhood professional regarding the classroom community. Use the list of suggested questions to learn more about how and whether the teacher actively promotes a positive classroom community.
By Day 3 of Week 3
After observing in an early childhood setting, reviewing the Module 2 Learning Resources, and speaking with the teacher, address the following:
1.What are several critical components to creating a positive classroom culture that you observed/discussed?
2.What does the teacher do to build meaningful relationships with the children and the families?
3.What unique approaches to building a positive classroom culture does this age group require?
4. What challenges did the teacher face in this particular setting related to building a positive culture?
5.What cultural considerations does the teacher actively respect in order to promote a positive classroom culture?
6.What evidence-based suggestions do you have for improving this positive classroom culture?
