In Module 1 several theories were discussed to help us better understand the complexity of health and health promotion.  One on of the theories discussed was the Socio ecological theory – which has been operationalized into practice with a variety of socio ecological approaches (Slides 88 & 89).  In Chapter 5 P. 86 to 94 three health promotion interventions that used a socio ecological approach were discussed.
Case Study 1 is an individual assignment.  Chose one of the three interventions outlined in the textbook.  Using the textbook as a source, as well as, several other academic or organizational sources students will complete an academic case study analysis.
Preparing the Case
Before you begin writing, follow these guidelines to help you prepare and understand the case study (intervention):
1. Read and examine the case (intervention) thoroughly – use the textbook and search on the internet for sources that further explain the intervention or research that has been done on the intervention etc.
• Take notes, highlight relevant facts, underline key problems/strengths.
2. When you are reading focus your analysis
• What is the intervention; goals, objectives, audience etc.
• Identify two to five key successes and problems/challenges of the intervention
• Why do the problems and successes exist?  How could the intervention be improved?
• Was there a theoretical underpinning to the intervention?
• How does the socio ecological theory play out in the intervention?
• Were the outcomes met?
• How were the audience and all involved impacted by the intervention?
• What are the next steps – how could this intervention be approved upon?
3. Uncover information about the questions above
• Review course readings, discussions, outside research, your experience.

Case Study Analysis Expectations
Once you have gathered the necessary information, the analysis should include these sections:
1. Introduction & Background ( 5 marks)
• Identify intervention – the goals, objectives, audience and any other pertinent information.
• Identify the key problems and issues of the intervention.  Why did they occur?
• Also identify the key strengths of the intervention.  Why did they occur
• Indicate whether you feel it followed the socio ecological approach; if so why? If not, why not?
2. Alternatives (5 marks)
• What other theoretical foundations would aid the intervention?
• How could this intervention be improved and why is your suggestion suitable (support with evidence, concepts in class, outside sources)?
