QUESTION

For this assignment, you will read a scholarly article and write an essay that is 3 full pages (minimum), double-spaced reviewing the article.
Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to familiarize students with scholarly articles, which are written by scholars on the topics about which they are researching and writing. Scholarly articles are usually the culmination of intensive research and writing by disciplinary experts, which can last years.
These scholars usually have attended graduate school to receive either a master’s degree or, more likely, a doctoral degree, and thus have pursued an education involving additional years of study beyond their undergraduate degree: for a master’s degree this often means at least 2 additional years of study, whereas for a doctoral degree this typically means an additional 6-9 years of study.
Scholarly articles are published in academic journals, which are journals dedicated to a particular discipline or sub-discipline (e.g. Women’s History) and they go through a rigorous vetting process in which other scholars in the field review the articles to ensure the following:
The evidence provided is thoroughly cited so that readers can verify the accuracy of the information provided.
The argument(s) presented in the article engage with scholars who have written on the same or similar topic, thereby ensuring that the article contributes something new and of value to the field.

Grading Criteria
To do well on this assignment, do the following:
1.Structure your essay around a thesis statement clearly stated in your introduction. Your thesis revolve around a broad argument about whether or not you would recommend the article for its intended audience, considering the author’s thesis, analysis, use of evidence, and its contribution to U.S. women’s history.
2.Identify and summarize the author’s main thesis and provide a brief summary of the article in paragraph 2
3.Make sure each of the following body paragraphs is focused on one clearly focused sub-topic at a time, and that each sub-topic should clearly support your broader thesis as stated in your introduction. Click here for help about essay structure.
4.Examine the author’s primary sources (the kinds of documents/interviews used to support their argument). For example, some author’s rely entirely on newspaper articles; some rely on a mix of sources like interviews, correspondence, newspapers, flyers, video coverage, pamphlets, memoirs, arrest records, data with regard to things like wages, and so on.
5.Try to identify the intended audience for the article. One way to do this is to think about the sub-discipline discussed. For instance, if the article is about women’s history, ask yourself what aspect of women’s history? Often the article is of relevance to more than one sub-discipline. If the article is about black women’s participation in the women’s suffrage movement, for instance, the author of the article would put their argument in conversation with the history of the suffrage movement as well as black women’s history in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
6.Explain how the article contributes to understanding women’s history.
Thesis Statement Help!
7.You are strongly encouraged to use the three-part thesis statement model, which ensures your thesis statement is argumentative enough, focused, and well supported. Click here to watch my short video about the three-part thesis statement.
See the rubric below the assignment for additional info.
MLA Citations
Your essay must have both in-text MLA citations and a works cited section. The one source you should cite is the scholarly article you read.
Every body paragraph should have a minimum of one or two in-text MLA citations. Remember that you need in-text MLA citations for all info. from the scholarly article–not just quotes.
You are not permitted to cite miscellaneous websites. If you find that it’s helpful to use an additional scholarly source or two to help you develop your own analysis, I will permit it, but I strongly encourage you to run the additional source by me by email first. I often see students using non-scholarly sources when they think they are using scholarly sources.
