During the year there are a number of key dates on which you are expected to submit your work and to meet your supervisor in formal meetings; these dates, and a summary of what is expected in these meetings, are given below. As well as the four formal meetings, there are also four supplementary meetings, which have no particular format, in these sessions you should discuss your progress, and any problems you might be having. Regularly meeting your supervisor and discussing your work will help you improve the quality of your thesis.

attend these meetings ready to discuss the progress you have made since you previous meeting, you will derive more benefit from these meetings if you properly prepare beforehand. While there is no rule about exactly what is discussed in the formal meetings with your supervisor, the comments below describe what will happen for a typical thesis.
• Topic Submission: You will be given a choice of topics from which you are expected to choose. We will do our best to give you your first choice and will assign your supervisor soon after.
• First Formal Supervision Meeting – Introduction: You will introduce yourself to the supervisor, and the supervisor will outline what (s)he expects from you and will help you to get started. You should take an academic paper to your meeting and be ready to discuss it.
• Outline Plan: You will submit an outline of no more than 1000 words explaining how you intend to proceed with your dissertation. For an empirical dissertation, a typical outline plan will briefly describe some of the most important papers on your dissertation topic (properly referenced); the data that you intend to use; and some details of how you will analyse your data.
• Second Formal Supervision Meeting – Outline Plan: Your supervisor will provide feedback on whether (s)he believes the outline plan is feasible and give you guidance about how to proceed.
• Third Formal Supervision Meeting – Data and Methodology: By this stage you should have collected your data and decided how to analyse it. You will present a summary and description of your data, and you will explain why you have chosen it and how you intend to analyse it.
• Fourth Formal Supervision Meeting – Preliminary Results: By this stage you should have a clear idea about the results that you will report in your dissertation. You will present your results and be able to discuss any methodological issues. It is important you have spent some time thinking about how to present these results (e.g. empirical results must be suitably tabulated). Discussing your results means that you have given some thought to how your results compare with other papers on your topic, and you can explain why your results are important or interesting.
• Preliminary Draft: By the time of the fourth supplementary meeting you should have a preliminary draft of your thesis. You should take your draft and discuss it with your supervisor during this week. While your supervisor will not be able to read the complete draft, they will briefly review the draft to make sure there are no serious mistakes or omissions.
