The Christian way of living is a relational one (Between Christ who is the groom and the church who forms the bride as implied in Matthew 25). In essence, Christians are followers of Christ implying that in virtually everything, Christians consider Jesus Christ as the perfect model and example in all their endeavors. According to James 1:17, there is a reminder that all the good gifts that Christians possess come from God (who is in heaven above) because of His matchless love towards His children. In this respect, there is great responsibility bestowed upon Christians in accordance with God’s government and economy regarding the gifts that He has endowed them with. These gifts include time, talent, and treasures (possession, wealth, assets, money among others). As a relational relationship, God requires absolute faithfulness among his stewards as it has been highlighted in 1 Corinthians 4:1-2. This level of faithfulness is an important indicator of the strength of relationship between God and His children, spiritual maturity, the weight upon which Christians put on the heavenly course, and the art of obedience. Stewardship considers this relational course and defines how God intends the relationship to be as well as how Christians give themselves to the ministry both in body and through their time, talents, and the treasures that God has endowed humanity with (because He owns everything). This paper considers the spiritual discipline of stewardship with a view to establishing the Biblical teaching, the purpose of stewardship, the history of stewardship, the current practices, as well as the application in the life of Christians.
Biblical Teachings of Stewardship
In understanding the Biblical stance on stewardship, it behooves any Bible student to primarily understand God’s economy and what stewardship means. Heuer (2010) defines stewardship as the proper management and care of some particular thing which someone has been entrusted with for instance money, time, and even talents. Throughout the Bible, there are various lessons drawn on stewardship, all of which are anchored on the fact that God is the sole owner of everything in the universe. Stewardship, according to Blomberg (2019) is the point of intersection of faith, economics and Christian works (Faith without works is dead according to James 2:26). From Matthew 25: 14-30, the Master (who depicts God) entrusts three servants (typifying Christians) with talents each. Of the three servants, two wisely invest their talents and generate profit while one does not invest. These coins are used to represent treasures which God endows to His servants. In this case, as Whitney (2014) highlights, stewardship is considered as a mystical component of spiritual formation and attaining competence in expressing God’s love to others. The talents (gifts) are to be used in multiplicity to bless humanity. The servants are not the owners but mere agents of transaction and thus required to remain steadfast and faithful in handling the gifts from God. The third servant who did not wisely invest the talent was cast away showing how important it is to handle these gifts as stewards (Whitney, 2014).
