QUESTION
Having begun as a deadly infection in China and the surrounding Asian countries, COVID-19 has immensely ravaged many societies across the globe. The estimated number of infections as of November 2020 is 57+ million cases with over a million deaths. While not being the first pandemic to disrupt human life, is behoves human beings to take great cares given the recent developments in the world such as the insurgence of Ebola, swine flu, HIV, among many other diseases and infections. COVID-19 has changed society economically, socially, morally, and in all manner of ways. In virtually every corner of the world, it has created a new normal (Nickbakhsh et al., 2020). However, there is still no absolute certainty that it will fully subside given the cases of reinfections and new cases emerging. While it may not be the case that everyone has the right and proper information on COVID-19, it is expedient that this deadly disease is considered in line with a historical pandemic to develop the right mental picture of how serious this pandemic has been. From a historical perspective, this paper thus considers the Spanish Flu-one of the deadliest reported pandemics and assesses how this pandemic could be related to COVID-19.
The latter years of the 20th century were more stressful ones. In 1918, the first world war had just ended-remarkably known as the great war. Yet the world would be ushered into one of the worst periods of the century where a pandemic would claim more lives than all the first and second war combined. As Spinney (2017) reports, the period spanning 4 years since 1918 through to 1922, the Spanish flu pandemic would infect more than one-third of the entire human race living on earth. Moreover, this author adds that this flu claimed an estimated 50 to 100 million lives (Trilla et al., 2008). Moreover, very few people are aware that the first recorded case of the 1918 Spanish flu was not reported in Spain but rather in Kansas, in the United States. Unlike COVID-19, the Spanish Flu is reported to have been very deadly-infecting people of all walks and especially young people. This flu struck the world in three waves that saw millions die in addition to many people suffering the negative externalities that came with it (Spinney, 2017).
The right historical setting places the Spanish flu to a world that new no technology. The world population then was approximately a quarter of what we are having today and it is recorded in history books that infectious diseases were the deadliest in the then society. Most deaths were associated with infectious diseases than with anything else. During that time, there were very scanty pieces of information on public health and so the majority of people did not even have proper information on viruses (Spinney, 2017). The 1918 influenza pandemic was caused by an H1N1 virus which had genes of avian origin. Despite a lack of concrete evidence on the exact origin of this pandemic, the story of how it infected people from many places remains told. In the US, it was first instances of the virus was reported among the military-who had spent a better of their time in the battleground. The first wave of the insurgence of this flu was rather mild. It occurred in the spring. Those who got infected with this flu reportedly experienced the symptoms typical of flues such as chills, fever and fatigue. People never stayed sick for a long time as the sick usually recovered after several days, and in addition to low casualties. However, in the second wave, the virus became increasingly highly contagious as it appeared with a vengeance in the fall of that same year. Unlike the first case where the virus was mild and those who had been infected recovering within some days, this time around victims died within some hours or days of developing symptoms. Moreover, when one got infected with the virus, their skin turning blue and their lungs filling with fluid that caused them to suffocate. It is estimated that in just about a year of incessant infections, life expectancy in the US greatly declined owing to the innumerable deaths that occurred (Schwartz,2018).
