Despite many Canadians not being aware, the country largely lies within the Pacific region’s “ring of fire” and as such is endowed with several active volcanoes. It is estimated that within the past 10000 years a whopping 49 volcanoes have erupted. Given the active nature of the forces leading to the eruption of these volcanoes, scientists have maintained that more volcanoes are certainly going to erupt, it only is a matter of when. In Canada, there are about five volcanic areas that are deemed to be potentially active with a higher susceptibility to eruption as compared to other areas. Virtually all of these active volcanic areas are located within the British Columbia and Yukon regions. Of the five, this paper will lay an emphasis on the Northern Cordilleran volcanic province of northwest British Columbia with respect to the various volcanoes and much details about them regarding their occurrence, the timelines, in addition to the devastative effects to humans.
The northwestern regions of British Columbia and Yukon are geographically endowed by several volcanoes. Most of these volcanoes are of the Northern Cordilleran Volcanic Province and were formed as a result of the continental rift of the Northern American plate. This region remains to be the most active volcanic region in Canada given the notable volcanoes that have been reported and the effects registered on both flora and fauna. Tseax Cone
This volcano is a young cinder cone situated in the Northern Cordilleran Volcanic Province in British Columbia, Canada. It is in this site where the most recent volcanic eruption occurred in Canada. This specific eruption was marked by a major lava flow around the years 1750 or 1775. During the eruption, the were fluid basalt lavas which produced fissure eruptions, strombolian activity and as well lava lakes inside its crater. By far, this volcanic eruption is still considered to have been the deadliest considering the adverse effects it had on mother nature in the regions where it occurred and the ripple effects were felt.The emitted basalt lava flowed into Tseax River thus consequently forming a Lake Lava as a result of the damming effect. Moreover, the flow of this lava traversed an entire 11 km North to the Nass River filling an additional 10 km flat valley floor. Aggregately, the lava flowed for an entire distance of 23km long (Gallo, 2018).
