The paper discusses the elements of the two tales of Cinderella. A comparison between the two elements will be discussed so that the common elements could emerge out from the tales. The two versions that will compare in this paper are “The Twelve Months” and “Tam and Cam (Vietnam)”. There were many common elements in two tales and some of them are discussed in the paper.
Common elements are stepchildren, love and hatred and inclusive of birds in the tales. There were two step sisters named Helen and Marouckla in the first tale. Helen was her real child, and her husband had already passed away. Marouckla was unpredictable that is why her mother did not like her as she was a step child. In the tale, “Tam and Cam”, are step sisters. Tam’s mother died earlier, and father also left her with her stepmother. Tam was her stepchild that was also the responsibility of the mother. It could be observed that there was a slight difference between the two tales of their mothers and fathers. Overall, the introduction revealed that the two tales have the same element in which one of the two children is an orphan.
Another general element in the two tales was the concept of love for blood relations and hatred for others. In the first tale, Marouckla was unaware of her dressing and looks, and she failed to understand the reason of hatred by her mother. Her mother was paying attention to Helen and ignored her stepdaughter, Marouckla who was nice to her. The second tale is revealing the same concept of love and hatred by a stepmother. Tam was treated like a maid in her home. She was like a slave that had a null value in her mother’s and sister’s eyes. Her responsibilities were very harsh including caring of Buffalo, carrying water, and washing vegetables throughout the day. She was forced to do several works while her sister was busy enjoying games all the time. Her hatred towards the stepsister was disgusting while the unnecessary care for the real child by the mother had a negative effect on Tam. The element of love and hatred in the two tales are similar to each other in which favor is given to the blood relation. Both tales have pointed out the real fact that blood relation is entertained in the house.
The third element was the use of birds in both tales that were done for making them interesting and enjoyable. There was a scene in the first tale that a crow came to the house and ate some sauce that was prepared by Marouckla. A bird was included in the second tale to make it interesting and attract readers. An eagle was introduced in the second tale but in a small scene. Birds were mentioned in the tale to involve nature so that the readers can relate to them and idea behind the two tales. The use of birds in both tales shows that the nature is an important element of life.
It could be concluded that the two tales were different, but there were some similar elements that are mentioned in the paper. Blood relationship, love, and hatred, and use of birds are described in the tale. Although the timing and way of delivery are different, there is a link between the elements of two tales.
