However, Baxter is quite the opposite. Baxter is extremely conceited, self-centered and a narcissist. Baxter states that “I’m good, my sales staff is good, and we all know it. The competition is jealous”. The statement itself makes it seems like Baxter is a team player and extremely proud of himself and his team. Under normal circumstances that would be a great thing, and everyone would say he has a right to brag on him and his team for all the hard work they are doing and continue to do. What hints do you get from this case that Baxter is charismatic? In terms of being charismatic, Baxter’s communication skills with the manufacturing executives. He knows how to say all the right things to make them spend top dollar for the products at Train and Subway Interiors. Also, he can be seen as a visionary because of the marketing strategy in which he developed for the company. What hints do you get from this case that Baxter is narcissistic? Baxter has a self-promoting personality. When you go into his office, you see all huge pictures of him being front and center in group photos. It appears that he has almost every award he has won since college and other places of employment all over his office as well. When Megan was trying to talk to him about a problem, he would start talking about himself and how he overcame issues he had faced. Baxter also feels that without him the company would only have scraps to sale because it’s his marketing and sales skills that make everything sound good and worth having. What suggestions can you offer Baxter so he can make more effective use of his charisma?I think the main ways Baxter can make more effective use of his charisma is by becoming a more transformational leader. According to Andre Durbin, transformational leaders focus on what the leader accomplishes, yet still pays attention to their personal characteristics and his/her relationship with group members. Although this may still sound like Baxter sound like a narcissist, we should focus on how a transformational leader inspires people, builds trust, and helps people search for self-fulfillment.
