What is the current penalty for perjury in a federal court?
See whether you can find out by using Cornell law school’s online law library – at this site:
http://www.law.cornell.edu/
First, go to the site.
Look for the blue links marked “read the law.” Notice that there is a row of federal materials and another row for state materials.
Select “US Code” (a compilation of all of the current laws passed by Congress, in topical order)
Scroll down until you see a list of the Titles (one per topic in the code). Note the warning at the side, asking you to search one title at a time, instead of searching the whole code. It is always easier to find a needle in a smaller haystack.
Click on Title 18 – the Criminal Code.
Enter “perjury” in the search box, and then check the statutes that pop up.

PS – You can also “just google” to find answers to straight orward legal questions like this one. You might be surprised to learn that the penalty for perjury in a Maryland court is much stiffer than that levied by the feds. If you google “Maryland perjury statute” you might find a link like this one. If you follow that link, you’ll see that lying in a Maryland court could (in theory) get you ten years!
