American culture and Haitian culture have major differences in many different ways stemming from the fact that Haiti is one of the poorest countries where most of the country is at risk of hunger and lack of medical supplies, the average family of 6 makes less than 500 per year. America on the other hand is wealthy being one of the richest countries with stable medical care, people go to America to live the “American Dream”, there is no “Haitian Dream”. Everything differs from culture norms to values to language.
First starting with the Norms of each culture, in America some norms and everyday things include eating 3 times a day, breakfast, lunch and dinner and hygiene things like showering 2-3 times and brushing your teeth for 2 minutes. There is also mannerisms which include saying “Please” and “Thank you” or covering your mouth when sneezing/coughing. In terms of education the norm for americans is attending public/private schools from preschool to 12th grade then going on to study at college. These are basic things that are normal for an american life and very common. Then in Haiti in comparison to America, norms are different due to conditions of the country. For example when it comes to hygiene, most of the country is poor so they live in unsanitary situations where they cannot bathe everyday due to dirty water. Haitian culture greeting are also similar but also different, men usually do a handshake just like in america but it is often an aggressive handshake, then women greet with a kiss on the cheeks which we see in other cultures too, also passing gas near someone is considered very rude. Lastly in Haiti soccer is a very popular sport and actually the only sport they really play whereas in America multiple sports are popular like basketball, football, and baseball.
Values of the two countries also differ a lot since they are two completely different situations. In America we value first our freedom and equality, our issues include those with racial rights and gay rights and are mostly fighting with ourselves due to problems created by racism, bullying, and money. We also really value our rights like freedom of religion, freedom speech, and freedom to peaceful protest which is mostly used against our own government. We also value time a lot, time is money in America and if your wasting your time your probably losing money in the process, being late or unready to certain things is almost like a crime in the business world, everything has to be planned. In Haiti things are different, Haitians most value family and religion over anything. Most haitians are Roman Catholic and even a small group practice Voodoo which is a religious cult that has to do with sorcery and spirit control, this concept actually originated in Haiti and has expanded to places like Jamaica and Brazil. When it comes to time, since most public transportation doesn’t run on time in Haiti, being late isn’t that big of a deal and honestly is expected in the culture just because it is so underdeveloped over there.
