Reflection Assignment

Pope Francis has called the ongoing conflict in Syria “the worst humanitarian disaster after World War II” (Gavlak, 2018, np)

• The conflict has been going on for eight years

• In the words of the head of the U.N. refugee agency, “we are witnessing an extended failure of political action by states to find a solution to this war… an increasing internationalization of the conflict” (with a number of countries now involved in the crisis)

• Turkey has invaded a town in northwestern Syria, Afrin and 31 national Catholic justice and peace commissions have called along with the people of Afrin for an “immediate cease-fire and establishment of a no-fly zone as well as humanitarian corridors for medicines and relief supplies”

• Many thousands of displaced and homeless Syrians are looking for shelter in Afrin from other war torn parts of the country

• Many civilians have been killed since Turkey “invaded” Afrin earlier this year

• The United Nations Security Council has demanded an end to “the indiscriminate use of weapons in populated areas” though thousands of civilians have died, and continue to die in the conflict

• Fr. Emanuel Youkhana, “Archimandrite of the Assyrian Church of the East”, has called for an end to the war and for urgent international aid: “battle cannot be a path to peace”

• Human rights advocates have identified the indiscriminate bombing of civilians as the major cause of the crisis in Afrin

• The BBC has reported that by 2016 almost five million people had to leave Syria because of the conflict, mostly women, and children – “one of the largest refugee exoduses in recent history”

• The BBC also reports that over six million Syrians have been “internally displaced”
