Burak, S., Dog?an, E. and Gaziog?lu, C. (2004). Impact of Urbanization and Tourism on Coastal Environment.Ocean & Coastal Management, 47(9-10), pp.515-527.

The authors have conducted a detailed analysis of effects of urbanization and tourism on the Mediterranean countries, as the cities at the coastal areas are already having insufficient infrastructural facilities and due to urbanization, the population is bound to live in congested living settings. It further couples with illegal settlements because of migration from other parts of countries by the tourists who come and stay there for long for business or other purposes. These smaller coastal areas are increasingly converting into urban areas due to encouragement and institutional incentives for tourism investments. Hotels construction and explosion of secondary housing cooperative has resulted into loss of fertile land, increased pollutions and loss of tangerine and olive orchards. The authors conclude by this study that there is an increased salinization of the coastal aquifers due to over exploitation. Apart from that, the densely constructed multi- story tourist hotels situated at shore line has covered the agricultural land which is negatively impacting these areas. This is also applied to Istanbul, Turkey as it is also situated at sea shore. Infrastructure here is very good and tourists often come here to visit museums and hang out at sea shore. This is traditional historical tourists place for many who want to enjoy peace, sea water and history. High urbanization rate has converted this city to a densely populated area. As a result, the city is expanding itself and acquiring agricultural land. Hotels and restaurants to satisfy the increasing needs of tourists have been constructed in these areas which are reducing harmony and originality of the place. This study elaborates a very important effect of tourism on any city but at the same time, it increases the economy of the place and adds to country’s economy.
