Literature Review

In Thailand, English proficiency is required in a number of institutions. Consequently, the Thai Ministry of Education has started to prioritise foreign language learning and has included the teaching of the English language as a compulsory subject. Foreign language learning, particularly English, has become one of the main target outcomes of secondary school teaching. However, In Thai secondary school, the traditional teaching model based on grammar translation and memorisation is still employed. Therefore, improving the English speaking ability of students is considered to be a challenging task. In a large EFL classroom, there will typically be between 40-50 students with varying degrees of knowledge of the English language. The main language teaching method is based on the traditional way of teaching grammar and is a teacher-centered approach. The majority of teachers has not yet received sufficient training to be able to teach Thai students to use the English language in an effective and practical way. It could be reflected that Thai teachers are not trained in foreign language teaching methods as seen by the low level of language acquisition and skills by the students, particularly speaking skills. In Thailand, the teaching of the English language in an EFL class normally relies on teacher instruction where the teacher passes on a great deal of content to the students and tends to dominate the classroom. This is the teacher centered model. However, The English language has been taught in Thailand for decades but the outcomes have not been successful. Educators seem to be going in the wrong direction and the teaching is fragmented and inefficient. Most Thai students still struggle with foreign languages, particularly English. They especially have trouble speaking the language as they lack exposure and opportunity to practice. Also, the way they are being taught may be ineffective. The teaching method that teacher uses can potentially affect the language acquisition and development of students.
