The Module will provide an introduction to the concept of sound transport planning and management and the reasons and ways in which people and goods move around and between towns and cities will be given. An understanding of travel and transport systems and their practical application will be explored. Students will be made aware of the political background, planning frameworks and legislation as well as evaluating transport policy, practice and management systems. This module examines how different transport policies and practices contribute to the travel demands and the urban form and also how good transport management can contribute to sustainable development. The impact and outcomes from a range of transport policy initiatives raise ethical issues such as the uneven social and environmental costs and benefits that have resulted from increased private car use. Specific examples of the environmental impacts of the transport sector and approaches to address them will be explored in more detail. There is a link between energy consumption in transport and density/built form Transport and air pollution including Local Air Quality Management and Low Emission Zones. The module provides a practical application on how improvements can be made to sustainable transport and techniques in influencing people and management within an
organisation and stakeholders outside the organisation. This is designed for those promoting or regulating travel plans within governmental organisations as well as consultants designing travel plans for different organisations.

Questions:

1) Citing relevant approaches, critically discuss how future provision of transport can be achieved through local or national behavioural change strategies and/or sustainable transport policy and planning.

2) Using either the UK or international example, critically evaluate the effectiveness of organisational and/or area-wide Travel Plans in reducing transport related issues at the local level.
