Case Study Analysis Assignment:
Task:
The primary aim of this assessment is to understand the effect and impact that business processes, competing and/or complimentary technologies and information systems have on an organisation. This means that just describing a technology or how the case study organisation may use a technology is an inadequate response to the tasks in this assignment. There is an expectation that your submission will be analytical, and will draw on theory to frame responses to tasks.
BALOGNE PTY LTD – Fictitious case study scenario
Balogne Pty. Ltd. was founded in 1965 in Mackay, Queensland by Louis Hape, a former Cane Sugar farmer. He moved away from farming when he started a mill and refinery to process the sugar from local cane sugar farmers. His business flourished over the years and has grown into a multi-million dollar company with a strong penetration in the Australian market, and a developing export business. Not only does Balogne produce a large range of sugar products such as raw sugar, white sugar, brown sugar, icing sugar etc, but also golden syrup and treacle.
Every morning, a fleet of trucks and trains leave the mill to collect the harvested sugar cane from selected farms in the area. At the mill, the sugar cane is crushed by large rollers. Juice is extracted then clarified to remove soil and impurities. This juice is concentrated into a syrup by boiling off excess water until sugar crystals have formed and grown. The crystals are tumble dried to form raw sugar and placed in large storage bins for transport to the bulk sugar terminals or refineries. Most raw sugar requires further processing at refineries in order to meet food manufacturers and consumer needs.
At the refinery, the raw sugar crystals are washed and dissolved in hot water to form a syrup. Phosphoric acid and lime are added to the melted sugar to remove any impurities left over from the clarification process. The syrup is pressure filtered through cloth, passed through decolourising columns containing activated carbon, and boiled in a vacuum pan. When the crystals are large enough, they undergo a centrifuge process to remove excess liquid and then tumble dried. The dried sugar is either packaged or undergoes further processing to become golden syrup or treacle. A second fleet of trucks then delivers the product to major distributors around Australia. The mill office workers keep details on farmers, product manufacture, and distributors. The sales team keep records of sales data (refer section on Sales Data on page 3).
Recently a new general manager, Ms Erica Norris, took over the reins from Louis Hape who retired. You have been hired as a trainee Business Analyst to help Erica understand Balogne better and to improve its business processes. Erica has asked you to submit a business report (with academic references) with the
following information:
– two (2) graphs created in Microsoft Excel that show sales statistics (refer Task A)
– one (1) Swim Lane Diagram showing the current business processes at Balogne (refer Task B)
– responses to some direct questions (refer Task C)
Task A: EXCEL SPREADSHEET
Erica wants to evaluate the 2014 and 2015 sales figures. Erica knows enough about Excel to realise it could be a useful tool so she has asked you to create a Microsoft Excel prototype which provides an overview of the revenue and expenses over the two-year period. The data for the spreadsheet is available on the next page as well as a suggested layout with additional hints and information.
Graphs: You are also required to create two (2) graphs.
1. Show, by product, whether there has been a percentage growth or loss in earnings from 2014 to 2015. Graph must look like Graph 1 shown on next page (except amounts). Colors may differ.
2. Show the yearly earnings. Graph must look like Graph 2 shown on next page (except amounts). Colors may differ.
***** Both of your graphs must be included on your Excel file and copied into your business report ****
Task B: PROCESS MODEL
Produce one (1) As-Is process model (not hand drawn) using Swim Lane format from the details provided in the Background section (clearly state any assumptions made):
NB: You do not need to use special software for this. Microsoft Word will suffice or you can use Microsoft
Visio – you may have access to elms to get if for free: https://elms.ict.swin.edu.au/
Please note: instructions on Visio will not be given as it is your choice to use this software
***** Your Swim Lane Diagram and assumptions must be copied into your business report ****
Task C: QUESTIONS
Respond to the following questions
(i) What is the role of business process modelling for organisations such as Balogne? What are some benefits to the General Manager, Ms Erica Norris in viewing a Process Model such as your Swim Lane Diagram for Balogne? Include your Swim Lane Diagram (from Task B) as part of your explanation.
(ii) How could using a software tool such as Microsoft Excel support Erica’s business decision making? Refer to the two (2) graphs (from Task A) as part of your explanation.
(iii) How could Balogne use Web 2.0 applications to better collaborate inside and outside the organisation? In your explanation include two (2) different types of Web 2.0 applications you would recommend for adoption by Balogne. The first application must address the use of Web 2.0 for internal communication while the second application could be used to communicate with farmers or distributors.
(iv) How could Ms Norris use Decision Support Systems to help support her decision making?
(v) Explain the value chain and how Balogne could use it to improve operations. NOTE: Minimum of five (5) in–text references required from credible sources (i.e., books, journal papers, conference papers).
***** Your responses form part of your business report ****
