Please note that students may select their own focus for an educational program for their target learner/s with special education needs for this piece of assessment. The list of possibilities for a program of study is limitless. However, students are advised to discuss their program of study with their individual MUSEC academic supervisor. In order to give you a general idea about what is required in Part 3, the focus of the following information is for a behavioural support plan.

Behaviour change is a dynamic and ongoing process. Special education teachers are interested in documenting and analyzing repeated measures of behaviour change over time. Graphic displays of behavioural/academic skill data provide a format from which valid and reliable decisions from raw data are best analyzed. Through the visual analysis of graphic displays of data, special education teachers are able to answer questions related to the meaningfulness of behaviour/skill development change. Individual learner programs (ILP’s) are the most commonly used form of intervention, when teachers need to work on a specific skill or task with an individual learner with a special education need. Components of individual learner programs include the targeted skill to be taught (dependent variable), and the precise manipulation of the independent variable (the intervention program), careful observation and measurement, and ongoing visual inspection of resulting data patterns.

When using any type of intervention to change a behaviour/skill, it is impractical, impossible, and undesirable to continue the intervention indefinitely. Therefore, shifting from an individual intervention program to a normal everyday environment can be accomplished by the gradual withdrawal of the ILP. Some learners may require some level of ongoing intervention in which constant monitoring and program evaluation will be required. As a result, recommendations for the systematic planning of generalized behaviour change is an important part of any ILP.

In part 2, students outlined their intervention plan for an ILP or a small group of students. In Part 3, students are to implement a series of lessons (NB: a minimum of 5-6 lessons) incorporating on going record of their observations of the target learner/s’ learning; reflections on teaching and learning outcomes; and write up the results. The portfolio should describe the intervention program. This description should be sufficiently detailed to enable another teacher
to be able to implement the intervention in the classroom.

Describe the progress of the learner/s. Evaluate and reflect on the program implementation.
Describe how the data was collected. Describe how the intervention program was evaluated (to assess whether or not it did in fact work). This evaluation should include the collection of objective data on the target behaviour and replacement behaviours; or concept/skill development, via observation to evaluate the effects of the intervention program. Students are to make 1-2 recommendations for future instruction of the target skill that could be offered to the learner’s parent or teacher.
