Task:

1. An overview of your client
My client’s demographic characteristics would be that she is:
A. 22 years of age
B. Female
C. Lives at home with her parents and two siblings
D. Has a casual job
E. Studying a marketing degree at Deakin university part-time
F. Born in Australia

My client’s physical activity patterns are quite concerning as she doesn’t get much physical activity in her everyday life. Even though she does a lot of walking around as she’s a sale assistant at a shopping centre, it is still not enough to make sure she is meeting the standards for her age.
A. How active is your client?
My client is not active at all. Between work and university, she is not getting any exercising in which is worrying for her potential future risks for her health such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, etc.
B. How do they compare to other people of their demographic?
In comparison to other people of their demographic, my client needs to do at least 30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week to stay healthy for her age. Roughly 2.5 to 5 hours a week is recommended for Australian women aged 18-64 years of age (Australia’s Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines, 2017). My client is currently doing 0 minutes of exercise a week so it is recommended for her to start slowly and then gradually accumulate to the recommended guidelines.

2. Health benefits of PA for your client
A. What diseases could be prevented with the addition PA for your client?
If my client was to increase their physical activity levels they would be preventing diseases such as cardiovascular disease. ‘Some studies show that walking briskly for even one to two hours a week starts to decrease the chances of having a heart attack’ (Harvard T.H. Chan, 2017).

3. Correlates of PA
My client has stated that she has a few barriers as to why she is not exercising as much as she can be.
Her reasons include:
A. Not having anyone to exercise with
B. Her lack of skills and knowledge on how to exercise
C. After work and university, she has no energy left
D. She has no motivation or self-discipline
E. No support from her peers
F. Balancing work, a relationship and university is hard work so she is finding it hard to find a balance and to stay organised
G. Basically, she doesn’t like it and finds no enjoyment in exercise
Her reasons are quite popular excuses when it comes to not being able to exercise. No motivation and no support from her friends/peers is a popular one. Trost, Owen, Bauman, Sallis, Brown, 2002 performed a study that reviewed the factors that are associated with physical activity within in adults and their results showed similar if not identical factors similarly to my clients.
