Description:

Today’s HR professionals are expected to understand and practise human resource management that is strategically aligned with organisational goals, and creates value for the organisation. This unit integrates theory and research to develop students understanding of evidence-based human resource management, and their professional skills in human resource management practice. The development of an organisation’s human resources is widely recognised as a critical component in gaining competitive advantage in the global marketplace. Developing people’s capabilities in diverse contexts is thus a vital contribution by HR professionals to the continuous improvement of an organisation’s workforce.
The unit is composed of four modules that develop and integrate student understanding of evidence-based strategic HRM:
1. Module 1 Strategic HRD and value creation
2. Module 2 Managing performance;
3. Module 3 Developing and implementing training;
4. Module 4 Creating value from employee diversity

The modules will be integrated under the theme of strategic HRD. From this perspective, the emphasis is upon ensuring that different ‘bundles’ of HR practices in firms are strategically coordinated horizontally with each other and vertically with corporate strategies.

Task 1: Reflective Journal Entries
Task Description: The broad purpose of this assessment item is to develop your skills and practices as reflective, evidence-based HRM practitioners. The specific purpose of this task it to have you consciously reflect upon how your
understanding about practising HRM is changing as you progress through this unit, and identify how your learning experiences may be changing the knowledge, skills and values you will take out of the unit and into the HRM
profession.
To complete this assignment, you must complete one reflective journal entry for Modules 1, 2, and 4. To do this, you will upload a Word dcoument contining your Reflective Journal Entry to MyLO in the last week of the module. You do not have to complete a reflective journal entry for Module 3 as the assessment task for that module includes a reflective exercise.

Task 2: Performance Management Report
Task Description: The purpose of this assessment task is to synthesise and extend your theoretical and practical knowledge about performance management. The task requires that you develop a performance management plan to
encourage and evaluate collaboration between 2-person teams of dog walkers in the Happy Dogs organisation.
To complete the task you will work in groups of five (5) students to develop a report for Happy Dogs, detailing your recommendations for establishing a performance management system focused on fostering, evaluating and rewarding collaboration. Your report needs to detail your recommendations about:
1. The performance criteria used to define ‘collaboration’ between dog walkers, and evaluate how well they collaborate
2. What the performance management system should measure to evaluate people’s performance as collaborators
3 Who the performance information should be collected from, and the information that should be collected from each source
4. How feedback should be provided to walkers about their performance as collaborators, including a script for holding performance feedback conversations with:
A. A walker who is performing well as a collaborator
B. A walker who is performing poorly as a collaborator
C. A walker who is performing extremely well as a collaborator
D. How walkers should be rewarded for outstanding performance
Your performance management plan is expected to be fully referenced, that is, you will need to provide appropriate justification and support for what you propose. This can most easily be done with reference to journal and
textbook material of proper standard.
