Management Decision Making Living Wage Assessment Answer
Assignment Task: MSO4735
Data Analysis Report Writing Assessment
The Living Wage is a voluntary scheme in the UK whereby companies agree to pay employees a minimum hourly rate set by the
Living Wage Foundation
, an independent organisation. A number of advantages to adopting the living wage are claimed by the Living Wage Foundation including improved retention of employees, and reducing the level of absenteeism. It is also claimed that managers of companies where the living wage has been adopted feel there is an improvement in quality of applicants, an increased rate of retention of employees, and an “increased consumer awareness of their organisation’s commitment to be an ethical employer”.
The Living Wage Foundation proposes two levels of wage: London and non-London.
(Be aware the Living Wage is
not
the same as the government’s National Living Wage)

Brief

You have been asked to investigate the claims above by analysing the data provided in order to recommend whether or not your company, based in London, should adopt the Living Wage.
You have two sets of data that you will need to analyse for this assignment.

The first dataset includes the responses of managers in a selection of sectors across the UK to a questionnaire, which is included at the end of these instructions

The second dataset includes data on retention and absenteeism of employees in a number of companies based in London only.

The purpose of this study is to discuss the validity of the claims made by the Living Wage Foundation and, in particular, to consider the appropriateness of adopting the Living Wage in your London based company.

Assignment

The assignment assesses how well you have understood the techniques taught in class and whether or not you are able to apply these techniques to a given situation. You are expected to write a report, around 6-8 typed A4 pages, detailing your analysis and its interpretation in light of the discussion above. The deadline for the report is Wednesday 24
th
of April (week 26). I will provide feedback on your report if you submit it to me before Wednesday 17
th
of April.
The analysis should include the following although you may also study other relationships as appropriate.
Data File A – Questionnaire.sav
In this dataset there are six variables, they are answers to the questions on the questionnaire at the end of these instructions. You should include:

A brief description of the sample characteristics: the size of the company and whether or not they were based in London. You can assume for the purposes of this assignment that the sample was chosen to be representative of the population.

For
each
of the questions 3 to 6 you should analyse and interpret the responses with particular emphasis on the differences of opinions from managers of London based companies and managers from non-London based companies. You need to discuss clearly the differences between the responses using fully justified techniques.

Data File B – LWDATA.SAV
This dataset has nine variables, detailed below:

SIZE: The number of employees in the company

TURNOVER: The turnover of the company in the previous tax year

LONDON: A qualitative variable that takes the value 0 if the company is not based in London and 1 if the company is based in London

LW: A qualitative variable that takes the value 0 if the company has not volunteered to pay its employees the Living Wage and 1 if the company is paying its employees the Living Wage.

ECEMPLOYEES: The number of early career employees in the company, i.e. those that have been with the company for less than one year

CEMPLOYEES: The number of non-early-career employees in the company, i.e. those that have been with the company for longer than one year

PECEMPLOYEES: The percentage of the employees in the company that are early career, i.e. that have been with the company for less than one year

PCEMPLOYEES: The percentage of the employees in the company that are non-early-career, i.e. that have been with the company for more than one year

ABSENT: The average number of days per employee in the company that are taken off due to illness or other absenteeism

In your file you will be given the data for SIZE, TURNOVER, LONDON, ECEMPLOYEES, and ABSENT. The others will need to be calculated by you using the TRANSFORM option.
To analyse this data you will need to:

Calculate the data for the missing variables (above)

Perform a multiple regression analysis on the variables PECEMPLOYEES and PCEMPLOYEES with
a choice of
independent variables to determine whether the adoption of the Living Wage has an impact on the number of new employees and career employees.

Perform a multiple regression analysis on the variable ABSENT with
a choice
of independent variables in order to determine whether the adoption of the Living Wage has an impact of absenteeism.
