So stated, identifying a widely accepted theory of trade unionism has long proven problematic. Much depends on what period of history and/or what country the trade unions being investigated are operating. This course has looked at one effort at theorising the role of trade unions in terms of their purpose and the workers they seek to represent. As a means of carrying the analysis of the present essay, we refer you to two such theories that have sought to categorised unions in these terms: i.e., (1) trade unions organised to pursue Marxist-Leninist purposes, and (2) trade unions organised to pursue pluralist purposes. The complementary theorising of employer associations, also referred to in the course, will also be drawn upon; in this instance, (3) employer associations organised to pursue
laissez-faire
purposes, and (4) employer associations organised to pursue pluralist purposes. With these definitional criteria in mind, this essay asks you to address the following:
