Discussion: Study Approaches
Researchers use many different approaches to find the answers to their study questions. Study approaches include case series, cross-sectional, case-control, cohort, experimental, qualitative, and correlational. Each approach has its advantages and challenges.

For this Discussion, you will consider the many ways in which you could answer your research question. If you are considering an experimental method, consider the types of experiments. You may want to consider administering a survey, but you need to also consider the type of survey. One key element to valid research is the selection of the study approach.

To prepare for this Discussion:
Consider your research topic and the results of your literature review Review the different study designs presented in the textbook (Chapters 7–14)

What type of study design would you use for your proposed study (case series, cross-sectional, case-control, cohort, experimental, qualitative, or correlational)? Why is the approach you selected the most suitable to support your study question?

Statistics has a wide range of real-world applications. The article “This Is What Happens When A Math Genius Hacks OkCupid” shows how statistics can be used to help someone meet the love of his or her life:

What if you could meet, woo, and win your fiancé in just 90 days? That’s exactly what Chris McKinlay, a Boston mathematician, did in June 2012. McKinlay was working on his PhD at UCLA in June 2012 when he first joined OkCupid. After answering 350 questions from the thousands available on the site, he discovered that he only had a compatibility rating of over 90% with fewer than 100 women. Six disappointing dates later, and McKinlay realized that something needed to change. He decided to apply his data skills to his dating life.2

Do you think it is plausible for someone to meet the person of his or her dreams by using statistics in experiments and decision making? Why or why not? Do you think McKinlay’s approach would (or would have) worked for you? Why or why not? How do you think you could use statistics to experiment or make decisions in other scenarios?

This week, your assignment is going to be pieced together. You have created a business, identified trending issues, identified possible other ethical issues and done your best to get all of your employees on board.

All that is left is the presentation itself. For your submission this week you are asked to put together a PowerPoint presentation for your employees with accompanying/corresponding presenter notes for your reader. The PowerPoint slide presentation itself will include what is ethically expected of your employees on a day to day basis, all identified trending issues from Module 02, and all identified possible issues from Module 03 and guidance on what actions employees should be taking in these ethical dilemmas.

Given the fact that you are not presenting this PowerPoint and because a PowerPoint cannot present itself, you are asked to include accompanying “reader/presenter” notes in the notes section below each slide. These are the key notes that describe, explain and teach what the slide is trying to convey. Please note that a PowerPoint is not generally wordy and paragraphs should not be included on a slide. The slide itself is used as a visual for the audience and the notes section, which would be read by the presenter, is where the substance comes in.

Keep in mind it is HR’s job to expose all dilemmas that may plague their company or employees and adequately educate all employees so these concerns are not encountered in the workplace.

Your PowerPoint must be creative and a minimum of 10 slides not including the introduction or the reference slide.
