What is the central claim of this chapter? How has it changed the way you think about medicine? In what way do the ideas in this chapter reflect your values or beliefs? In other words, do the ideas in this chapter resonate in a more general sense?
Doctors of the Death Chamber
What was your response to “Doctors of the Death Chamber?” Did it change the way you thought about anything? What do you think about the following quote from the chapter (agree, disagree, why?):

Historians study the past to trace change over time and what the change means. In your response you will play the part of the historian. Rather than seeing the 1950’s and 1960’s as the beginning of the struggle for equality, you will trace that struggle back in time to either find the roots of activism or the roots of inequality people struggled against.
One of the guiding principles behind all historical writing is selection and interpretation. This means the thoughtful selection of topics and questions that seem most interesting, and the responsible interpretation of sources in order to construct meaningful arguments. Therefore, it is your job to decide how you want to construct an argument, what events, people, or laws you think are critical to understanding a history of struggle for equality and, most importantly, why that example is critical to a larger argument. However, your response must be focused around a precise thesis statement that will be the “roadmap” of your paper.
No outside sources are necessary or allowed, focus on the specific events, people or laws, lectures and the readings have covered. You may draw on any of the course readings up to week 4. This is it, ladies and gents. The Big Kahuna. The Whole Enchilada. The One You’ve Been Dreading. The Major Paper! *que ominous music*
It’s pretty simple, to be honest, so don’t freak out. Thus far you’ve been handing in short 2-3 page reader response papers. Think of this as an expanded one.
For the major paper all you need to do is pick a story, poem or play (from anywhere) and write me a 5-6 page analysis of it. Not a summary. I must stress that. Don’t spend 5 pages retelling me “The Tell Tale Heart” and end with “as you can she this stuff is spooky.” Analysis. What’s the author trying to say? How do they do it using all the concepts we’ve covered? Does the time frame play into how the story was constructed? The author’s life? Etc….. Take thsi wherever you want to go.
Pull it apart and tell me what its all there for.
That said, this paper will also require 4 outside sources and a bibliography. MLA format please. If you need help with it easy bib works as does Purdue’s Owl. That said, remember outside sources are there to help offer clarity. The primary text should be where most of the heavy lifting is done. Use that to back your points.
