Legalization of Marijuana

The legalization of Marijuana has been a topical and emotive issue for the longest time.

Over the past years, the marijuana legalization issue has generated debate, which has gradually led to the emergence of proponents and opponents of this subject. Those who wish for the legalization of Marijuana have several arguments in support of their position, which ranges from Marijuana medicinal value as it can be used for the treatment of several ailments including Glaucoma and Cancer, it’s used for recreational purposes, and it’s economic and fiscal importance. On the other hand, those opposed to marijuana legalization do as well have their points of arguments which include Marijuana’s impact on the society’s moral fabric and its effects on the criminal justice system.

Having followed this debate keenly over the years, the benefits that are to be gained from marijuana legalization outweigh the arguments fronted by the opponents of its legalization. Although there is already widespread usage of Marijuana despite it being illegal, many people still wish for its legalization under strict conditions and policies because of its medicinal, social, and economic values.

Firstly, despite the opponents having arguments against the legalization of Marijuana, it has a lot of medicinal value. Marijuana is an extract taken from the cannabis Sativa plant and has been used from time immemorial for medicinal purposes, albeit in an unprofessional manner. When this property of the marijuana drug is adequately utilized in the medical field, it will have the overall effect of reducing the cost of medical care significantly because the cost of manufacturing some of the medical drugs will be reduced since Marijuana is easily produced and accessed when the right legislation is put in place.

Recent scientific researches have as well established that Marijuana has a lot of medicinal value, which, when tapped and used correctly, can be used to treat a wide array of ailments ranging from mild to severe medical conditions like cancer (Carliner 52). Researches have shown that Marijuana contains a pain-relieving property, and this is what can be tapped for use in the management of pains associated with chronic diseases such as cancer. It is also a fantastic muscle relaxer and thus can be used to lessen tremors in Parkinson’s disease and for the successful management and treatment of endometriosis, fibromyalgia, and interstitial cystitis (Fraguas-Sánchez, Ana and Ana). Marijuana has also been tried on soldiers from combat fields who have post-traumatic stress disorder, and it has shown great success in the management and treatment of PTSD.

When further and more detailed research is conducted on the marijuana drug and its medicinal property further explored, this drug can end up being the wonder drug of the 21st century, and this will have an unmatched impact in the medical field. Despite the opponents having arguments against the legalization of Marijuana, it has a lot of medicinal value.

Secondly, as much as the legalization of Marijuana receiving some opposition, the economic value to be realized by its legalization outweigh the current efforts being used to enforce the rules and policies against Marijuana. Just like any other product, if Marijuana is legalized, it is bound to have massive economic benefits such as revenue generation in the form of taxes and the creation of employment opportunities. Considering that Marijuana is extracted from the cannabis Sativa plant, which is an agricultural product just like coffee, then its legalization will have a very significant impact in the agricultural sector (Denham 78).

Data from Colorado Department of Revenue shows that in 2019, from a sale totaled over 1.7 billion dollars, the state of Colorado collected over 302 million dollars in fees and tax from the medical and recreation use of Marijuana. Further, a report from an institute of cannabis research at the Colorado state university has shown the legal cannabis industry contributed more than 80.8 million dollars to the local economy. Economic researchers have also projected that the legalization of Marijuana by the federal government is set to have a significant impact on the economy in terms of the creation of more employment opportunities and a total increase of labor income. An ICF report on the economic impact of legalization in the state of California shows at least 81,000 direct, indirect, and induced jobs are set to be generated.

Further analysis of the fiscal impact of the legalization of Marijuana also suggests that expenditure incurred in the enforcement of the current laws and rules against Marijuana is set to reduce by more than half; this will leave a lot of resources that can be utilized in others sectors of the economy. Despite the legalization of Marijuana receiving some opposition, the economic value to be realized from its legalization outweighs the current efforts used to enforce the rules and policies against Marijuana.

Lastly, with individuals holding contrary views on the legalization of Marijuana, the social importance marijuana carries cannot be wished away. Prohibition of the possession and use of Marijuana significantly intrudes on the citizens’ freedom of choice. Alcohol and tobacco are equally harmful as Marijuana, but they haven’t been prohibited as his Marijuana, and this shows double standards in legislation (Koval, Andrew, David and Harold 392). Therefore, Marijuana should be legalized for recreational purposes, as is the case for alcohol and tobacco.

The prohibition of possession and use of Marijuana over the years has led to increased violence due to the illegal selling and buying of Marijuana, especially in the backstreets and the borders through which the drugs are smuggled into the country. The legalization of Marijuana will significantly reduce this violence because the parties involved will undertake their trade under the stipulated regulations and rules, thus the access to the legally available dispute resolution mechanism. With individuals holding contrary views on the legalization of Marijuana, the social importance marijuana carries cannot be wished away.

In conclusion, the issue of marijuana legalization continues to be a topic of great concern both at the federal and state government levels because Marijuana is widely consumed in the country despite the being regulations and policies governing against its sale and consumption. Over the years, there has been gradual emergence of two factions; those who are for the legalization of Marijuana and the one against. There are several arguments fronted in support of the legalization of Marijuana due to its social, medicinal, and economic value. Marijuana should be legalized under strict conditions and policies due to its medicinal, fiscal, and social importance, even though some people have counter-arguments against it. With no end in sight, the legalization of Marijuana will continue to be a topical and emotive issue because people have a varied opinion about it.
