Initial Post: After reading “Is the United States a republic or a democracy?” and “Our Government: The Constitution” reflect on the ideas presented in the texts. For this discussion, compose 2-3 paragraphs that address the questions and criteria below. Paragraphs should be organized by topic and not simply address the questions in order. Include examples from the readings via direct quotes and/or paraphrased ideas, complete with MLA in-text citations.
What is the definition of a “republic”? What is the definition of a “democracy”? Based on these definitions and your own personal experiences living in America, is the United States a republic or a democracy? Both? Neither? Why was the U.S. Constitution written? What is its purpose? Who does it serve? How are “freedom” and “democracy” related? How does the U.S. Constitution endeavor to establish America as a democracy and promote freedom among its citizens?

Discussion 2

Initial Post: Analysis is the act of breaking something down into its parts in order to gain a better understanding of the whole. A rhetorical analysis, therefore, looks at the way a piece of written work was constructed to achieve the writer’s goals. Specifically, a rhetorical analysis examines a text’s author(s), audience, purpose, context, and message.

After viewing “Preamble & Articles of the U.S. Constitution Infographic,” reading “The Constitution of the United States: A Transcript,” watching “Civil Right and Liberties – U.S. Bill of Rights,” and reading “Bill of Rights of the United States of America (1791),” complete a rhetorical analysis of both founding documents in the chart below. In addition, determine whether or not these founding documents have outlived their utility and explain the reasoning for your response.

When finished, summarize your ideas and include all required components listed below:
Elaborate on the ideas in your chart in one of two ways:
Compose 2-3 paragraphs that summarize the contents of the chart

Directions: Create a thesis statement for your “Democracy and Freedom” essay prompt. Your thesis statement should respond to the prompt directly, answering the module’s essential questions and fully engaging with and addressing its topics. Please review the “Democracy and Freedom” essay prompt carefully before creating a thesis statement.

An effective thesis statement should establish the following:
State an assertion Set limits on the topic Indicate organization
While a thesis statement is often only a single sentence, it is an integral component of your work. A strong thesis statement will help focus your essay. This assignment will be reviewed prior to your submission of the Module Four essay in order to provide feedback that can assist you in continuing to develop supporting details for your thesis.

Assignment 2

Overview: Many students (and Americans, in general) are disillusioned with the idea of America as a democracy. Despite supposedly having a government “of the people, by the people, for the people” as President Lincoln declared in the Gettysburg Address, the U.S. government increasingly appears to serve the interests of the few instead of the many: Elections are not won by majority vote; Congress is constantly stuck in gridlock; and despite ordinary Americans’ real concerns about climate change, the economy, gun control, health care, immigration, etc., nothing ever seems to change. Often, America’s founding documents, such as the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, are referenced and revered as encapsulating the nation’s principles and ideals, but who does the U.S. government truly serve and have these documents withstood the test of time given the ever-changing demographics of the U.S. over the last 240+ years?

Prompt:
Respond to the issues raised in this unit. Begin with a thesis that highlights your argument by considering the following:
Do you believe that the U.S. government, as a democracy and based on its founding documents and their subsequent amendments, is working to ensure your personal freedoms? (In other words, do you see yourself included in the “We” of the “We the People” of the Preamble of the U.S. Constitution?) What specifically about the way the government works, as outlined in these founding documents, needs to change to ensure the freedom of all Americans? How will you, as an informed citizen, work to affect this change?
Narrow your topic, and then reflect on the following essential questions:
What is the definition of a democracy? Does the United States have a democracy? Whose freedom was America originally founded for? Whose freedom does it currently serve? Is the U.S. Constitution a rigid document or a “living, breathing” document? Have founding documents like the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights outlived their utility? What’s the process for making amendments to founding documents such as the U.S. Constitution? Which articles and sections still need to be amended in order to ensure freedom for all?

I’m studying for my Philosophy class and need an explanation.

Before moving on to Kant’s resolution of the Rationalism-Empiricism debate, it is important to take stock of what we’ve covered thus far, which we’ll address in this Discussion Board.

Now that you have an understanding of Rationalism and Empiricism, and have studied Descartes’ Meditations as well as David Hume’s empiricism (which leads to skepticism, for Hume), you are well situated to apply what you’ve learned about theories of knowledge acquisition to your own experience in the world.

For this Discussion Board, you will post a thread that considers the merits of both Rationalism and Empiricism, before stating which theory (empiricism or rationalism) you are more inclined to agree with.

As you prepare your post, consider the following questions:

1. Is there anything you know with absolute certainty? If so, what is it, and how did you acquire knowledge of it?

2. Generally speaking, how do you acquire reliable knowledge about the world (through your reason and intuition, or through your sense experience)?

As you think about these questions, really try to challenge yourself. One way of doing this is by thinking about some of the more “abstract” knowledge you have, such as knowledge of you “self” as a substance that persists through time. How do you know you are a “self” and not just a mind plugged into a computer program?

NOTE: Be sure to include what you’ve learned thus far in this module. Students should demonstrate an understanding of the differences between the competing positions, as well as demonstrate an ability to logically evaluate the competing positions.
