Group Work Exercise #3 (Week 7):

Leadership, Diversity & Cultural Competence in Organizations

Break into your groups. Pick a leader and someone to keep track of time. The leader can facilitate a discussion focused on the following case vignette. As a group answer the questions that are listed below taking into consideration the leadership and cultural considerations in working with diverse groups in social work practice.

Group Case Study:

Joe has been the executive director of a North Philadelphia non-profit organization for the last 16 years. Many changes have occurred in this time: More young people come to work expecting to leave right at 5:00. He also has 2 fathers out on paternity leave, a retired army major working for him on a flex schedule, three employees who have started a Bible study group that meets over lunch once a month in the break room, and more and more clients, community members, and staff coming from international backgrounds. In addition, he is about to hire a Muslim woman who will be starting work next month. And, let’s not forget… The bi-weekly and monthly staff are still experiencing occasional friction over scheduling…. Staff, as well as clients, are responding to this diversity in many different ways. Some people are excited and seem eager to learn about the differences in the organization, while others appear apprehensive and seem to feel concerned about the degree of miscommunication. Joe sees the importance of enhancing cultural sensitivity of the people in his organization. How can he go about creating a more sensitive and respectful environment among his staff? How can he help them see the connections between customer service, communication, respect and the diverse expectations and needs of each individual?

Joe presents the idea at his manager meeting to implement diversity working group. As staff of Joe’s organization you all have decided to organize the group with the following three goals in mind:

1. To integrate diversity and equity concerns into workplace practices & to provide leadership for changing the work culture.

2. To sustain and support work culture changes that are consistent with evolving business goals.

3. To maximize organizational opportunities for motivating and rewarding employees and managers to think about diversity and equity in the work environment.

Questions:

3.Discuss and provide examples of how you plan to address the three aforementioned goals (identified in the case above).philosophy essay: nursing coursework help

You’ll probably have to do a little research. Use reputable resources, preferably academically vetted articles. By that is meant journal articles in scholarly publications. If you use media, then please use mainstream media for this; e.g.:publications such as the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, New York Times, Washington Post, Weekly Standard (on the conservative side), Time (also a bit onthe conservative side of things), National Review, etc. Do not over-quote, but always use quotes and facts as part of your argument. The paper should begin with a strong inductive argument of the kind we have discussed in class. It can be more elaborate—have more premises — than the one or two we have dealt with, but not much more. Treat the first paragraph like a thesis statement. The statement should be direct, to the point and be less than a page in length. The ensuing points in the rest of the paper should support the argument.

You can expand on the premises in the paper. It is best to look at the premises as the basic structure of the following paragraphs. Each paragraph or two (or three depending) discusses each premise.sociology discussion

I found the Nacirema people and their customs to be very interesting. Some of their rituals include bowing before a charm box and mingling holy water into a small font beneath it. These ceremonies occur daily, in a household shrine. Each charm in the box heals and protects against certain bodily ailments. There are also holy mouth men, whose rituals include “inserting a small bundle of hog hairs into the mouth, along with certain magical powders, and then moving the bundle in a highly formalized series of gestures” (Henslin 124). From this exercise, I learned about a tribe who views the human body as damaged, and works to counteract the inborn issues. This was especially compelling to read, because in the religions I am familiar with, the human body is celebrated and viewed as blessed, with diseases being the curse (rather than vice versa). I can assume that through this belief system, the Naciremas do not take their health for granted, and are appreciative of their wellness; while in Western religions, we believe we deserve to be healthy and become upset if the opposite occurs. I can apply cultural relativism to this reading because we must understand that these people do not live in the same society as we do. Because of their region and way of living, the Nacirema people have little to no access to statistics and science, so they must credit the supernatural for their observations instead. When studying sociology, it is important to remember “if all of the logically possible combinations of behavior have not been found somewhere in the world, he is apt to suspect that they must be present in some yet undescribed tribe” (Henslin 121).
