Question Description

Discussion Question:

No matter what high school you attended, there were several types of groups. Name the in-groups in which you were associated. Name the out-groups that clashed with the in-group. Explain why you fit into one, and not the other. Do you feel as if you could have learned to fit into the out-group had you tried hard enough?

Overview

Sociologists are most interested in groups and group interactions. Groups are not tangible: They are shared ideas consisting of two or more people who are bound together in relatively stable patterns of social interaction and who share a feeling of unity. Groups are fabricated in the course of social interactions as people are clustered together in social units — creating an existence beyond the individuals who are involved

In this module, group relations, group dynamics, formal organizations, and the sociology of work are outlined. In addition, each of these categories is broken down into different types of groups and group dynamics. Formal organizations and bureaucracy are also discussed in this module. Although bureaucracy plays a key role into groups and socialization, they have many disadvantages and limitations that play a key role in the sociology of work.

This module also explains why people work/or do not work and how they enter a category in society due to their work.
