Why Black History Month? Since its birth in February of 1970, there has been controversy regarding Black History Month. Upon the expansion from the original Negro History Week to the month of recognition, President Gerald Ford urged Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”
2016 marks the 46th year celebrating this time of remembrance. However, there are those who ask, “Why is there a need for Black History Month?” or, “Why isn’t there a White or Latino History Month?” Black History Month often sparks an annual debate about the continued usefulness and fairness of a designated month dedicated to the history of one race.

Black History Month is symbolic of the contributions African-Americans have made to America. If there wasn’t a time exclusively dedicated to shining light onto this subject, it could disappear and become irrelevant.
In this day and age, such history becoming inconsequential squashes the significance of what black ancestors of this country fought against – equality in the social system – which belittles what the current population is fighting for now- equality in the justice system.

To forget the struggle that African-Americans had to endure in order to cultivate their freedom and become equal is to diminish their worth altogether.
Arguing that there should be history months to celebrate any color and any background is an attempt to deem black people not prominent enough throughout this nation’s history for acknowledgement. If the tables were turned, there would be a higher demand and more dramatic emphasis on the time of appreciation.

Despite the controversy, Black History Month will continue occurring every February in order to honor the history that made America a collection of diverse people living together in peace.
