Women who escape the brothels do not receive any help from the community around them or the police. If they go to the police they are either returned to the brothels on the grounds that they are “runaways” or they are arrested for prostitution.
There is no easy escape from this dark reality for many young women. The young girls in the brothels are not given much choice they either work or die. These young girls are normally kidnapped from their homes or the street.
Some girls are even sold by their family to make ends meet. How do we live in a world where these things are a norm? How do we just look the other way and pretend that nothing is happening?
Half the Sky has a few issues that the authors skipped though. They fail to mention that these kidnappings and young girls being forced into prostitution happen in developed countries as well not just underdeveloped countries. Women are told to fight back and to defend their rights.
How are they supposed to do that when the whole world is against them? There’s no obvious support for them.
Young girls are at risk every day because many would rather look away than deal with the baggage and emotions that come with realizing there is a problem that needs to be confronted head on. People need to open their eyes to the taboo subjects that are very real to this day.
