Purpose of the Hammurabi Code of Laws

To lay down a clear constructive set of laws to govern citizens. I believe this was necessary in that time of day to make sure all laws were met. It was somewhat of a fair law because it gave others a chance to redeem their innocence. If they were guilty of what they did they had to deal with the consequences and may lose things such as their homes or valuables. Some may get it back if proven innocent. This has also encouraged others to make laws, just as we have in place in this day and age.

They ask if Hammurabi’s Code of Law was fair or cruel. In my opinion, it is cruel and unfair. My reasoning behind this is that the accuser or guilty person was put to death in many of these laws. There could have been other punishments to the guilty party that did not result in death.
They could have placed them into a room or prison type of place.

What if they were truly not guilty of the crime or what they were being accused of? Then this person would be put to death and maybe killing and hurting innocent people. Everyone deserves a chance to fight or argue the reason behind what they are being accused or charged with. People of higher rank should not have special treatment because they are higher rank than another person. All people should be treated equally. I would not like to live in a nation that was governed by Hammurabi’s Code of Law because I would not like to see people being put to death due to something they did good or bad.
Some of the laws such as the one of crops have flooded the neighbor’s crops and then they should repay the ruined crops, this is a fair law to me and in this case the person who ruined the crops is not put to death. Although he still may be enslaved at least there was not a death resulting from this careless act.
A holy woman that was opening the tavern to get a drink is unfair for her to be burned to death just because she is trying to get a drink. I would not like to see women get burned to death. Most of Hammurabi’s laws were cruel and this is not something I would like to see in the current laws we have now. Some laws we still have and those are good laws but we have changed them a little.
