Happiness is essential to life. It is a key part of the human condition. A living being needs happiness to survive. That’s where I found myself struggling, I was never really happy on my own, I always had to have someone in my life for me to be happy. Like for example, me ex-girlfriend, Samantha. There are other things that play a point not only in this story but in the human condition, such as pain, grief, and love.

It was the first time I had ever been to school on my birthday and I wasn’t that excited for it. I was going along my day as if it were just a normal one, until my 3rd period. I walked into class and sat down in a different seat than normal because my friend wanted me to sit by her. The bell rang and my teacher began asking us questions about Christmas break and then she asked if anyone had celebrated any birthdays.
My friend Karme said “Alexis, isn’t it your birthday?” and I replied with “Yes.” Then I saw her, long red hair and green eyes that were like a forest ready to be explored. Samantha said “Happy Birthday” and that’s what started it all. It was love at first sight. She was beautiful, I thought to myself as she turned away towards the front of the class.
I was instantly captivated. After that we began talking and there was an instantaneous connection.
I fell in love, Samantha made me happy. I had never been happier in my entire life. She was good to me, sometimes. Things were good until about eight months later. Samantha ended up cheating on me with a guy and then left me for him. I was devastated. I was in a lot of pain and all I could do was grieve over the loss. It was terrible. Liam was one of the only people there for me, he would always tell me “Don’t worry Alexis, it’ll be okay, there will be girls better than Sam.” But I never believed him. Until one day I woke up and nothing hurt anymore. I didn’t feel the numbness anymore. I was actually happy on my own for once, it was the most amazing feeling. Now I knew what everyone was talking about. You can’t rely on other people to make you happy.
In conclusion, I learned a valuable lesson about falling in love and how to deal with loss. And happiness is a key part of living life and you need it to survive life. As RuPaul says “If you can’t love yourself, then how the hell are you gonna love somebody else?”
