Question Description

An understanding of statistics is essential if the numerous reports and documents issued within the healthcare industry are to be scrutinized and considered in a critical manner. There has been an increase in the development of research-based and evidence-based practice (EBP) in healthcare over the last two decades. Understanding statistics and analysis helps healthcare personnel to make sense of the research studies that underpin EBP and enables practitioners to undertake studies of their own.

Statistical information is valuable in determining what combination of drugs to administer a patient, which resources to allocate in producing them and to which populations to offer them. Health care statistics are critical to allocative and production efficiency. According to Andreu-Perez et al., (2015), allocation decisions involve trade-offs–the costs of lost or missed opportunities in choosing one economic decision over another. Reliable statistical information minimizes the risks of health care trade-offs. In my workplace we use statistical data to determine different treatment approaches of various patients.

Another important use of statistics is that, the health care sector benefits from knowing patient characteristics such as age, sex, race, income and disabilities. These demographic statistics can predict the types of services that people are using and the level of care that is affordable to them. According to Chen et al., (2017), health administrators reference statistics on service utilization to apply for grant funding and to justify budget expenditures to their governing boards.
