The California Gold Rush On January 24, 1848, one of John Sutter’s employees discovered a gold nugget while constructing a sawmill. Sutter tried to keep quiet at first, but news of the gold soon leaked out. Many tens of thousands people suddenly flocked to California, wanting to try their luck at striking it rich. The California Gold Rush attracted many immigrants from around the world, many of whom lived in California long after the gold rush. The gold rush is one of the biggest reasons that many people live in California today.

The gold rush also helped small local businesses in California, due to the large influx of customers.
The first and most major way that the gold rush changed the country economically was by attracting large numbers of immigrants to California “There are an estimated 40,000 people mining in California by the end of 1849. This helped the economy because now with so many people living in California, shops and businesses got more customers”More fortunes were made by merchants than by miners.

In addition to helping the country economically, the California gold rush changed the country physically. The first physical change was a more beneficial one, which is that the population of California increase tremendously”And the people just kept coming.
By the mid 1850s there were more than 300,000 new arrivals—and one in every 90 people in the United States was living in California.”(Barbara Maranzani, paragraph 2). This is beneficial to California because the higher their population, the more members in the House of Representatives.
This means California has more say in the government. The second physical change was the new stores and businesses opening up “Businesses that set up shop in California often outlasted the mining camps.”(Barbara A. Somervill, page 41) There were lots of new shops that changed California physically. Overall, the California gold rush changed California in many ways, both economically and physically.
