Looking back at the first ten years of my academic life in Vietnam and my personal observations to our American Education system, I was able to compare and contrast the two different education systems, the cultures, and aspect of students lives. The first factor is that the developing countries are different from America. In Vietnam, citizens didn’t have enough opportunities because most families are poor. For example, Vietnam students can’t get a hold of government help for financial aid or even loan programs.

Because most jobs are full time or just lack of jobs in general, due to high living cost at college and university most Vietnamese students stop their study. Government roles play a big part in educational systems.
American belief that school is a control place versus other cultures have different beliefs as the Japanese values in the interaction in the large group or the Vietnamese is to means to transformation their country (Preschool in Three Cultures).

In Cultural Production of the Educated Person, chapter ten discuss that present the hegemonic ally which means the power force in the education as to more control and only the elite will rule or lead the future generation to come. The Vietnamese Education system and “structure” are somewhat the same as America Education System but it is seems to take longer time to get their degrees due to social obstacles and challenges.
The structure goes like this: primary equal to five years at between the ages six through eleven, lower secondary is equal to fours years and age range from eleven to fifteens, upper secondary is like high school here but age between sixteen and eighteen.
 Finally, higher education equal university and colleges. In the end, students’ journey to university was harsh but graduating in a developing country could still led to unemployment. There are no corporations or business investment and undeveloped countries.
Second, at every level, there are schools that are private and public in an American Education system to benefit their students. Public schools are supported by the government and get money from taxes that people pay; private schools are not supported by the government and must raise money for themselves. Many privates school are connected to religions groups. For example, the Catholic Church has many schools. According to Eckert, in Jocks and Burnouts I found her reading to be very similar to how my American high school as territory and activities.
Our school was territory as to a safe place for students to meet other people and to be themselves. What I notice is that our school had more diversity than other “white dominant” schools. There was more than one language spoken at school like: Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, or Korea, and so on. Our high school main icon was a warrior similar to Native Americans at University of Illinois. I believe that Native Americans see don’t think it is just a dance- to them it is a mockery of their culture and their sacred acts. As for our school, we viewed as a hero we value them and teachings methods bisect with Native American which it the opposite Foley – on the Indian stereotypes and the Mesquaki case. Which means us horror Native America for the kindly give us something to live for: showing us how to plants foods. In our school we don’t mock or jokes around with Native America and we also encourage them to speak out instead of being silence. However, in the Vietnamese Educational setting the differences were less apparent because uniform dress codes were enforced.
The dress code is to wear white on tops and dark on the bottom and in high school and college females wear a long traditional dress called ao dai. In Vietnam there are more public schools than private schools due to the higher demand of majors, faculties, and the integrating into the worldwide system. The Ministry of Education and Training, making the exams really difficult to pass. They make all the decision on the exams, books, and printings are marked. The private schools are even more expensive than public schools but harder to find job once you graduate.
For example, if I can’t pass the public exams each school year then little or no hope for any future. The nature and society is that the public schools are more competitive and more companies will look at those students, similar to the Japanese situation (Cram School video clips). The decisions about political and economic could be bias toward the poor and uneducated. For example, United States is an open system where Freedom of Speech implies in the educational setting. According to Free Speech Movement and post case of Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas in 1954 means that separate educational facilities are inherently unequal -to overturn the 1896 case of Plessey vs. Ferguson, which justified Separate but Equal (Horowitz ). She discussed that college is no longer about making the grade, and students had more than just textbooks to studies. They were triggering experiences to sit-in, civil rights movement, protest, and cultural change.
For example, there is a picture taken by Dirch Halstead from Kent State which later won a Pulitzer. During the 1960’s and 1970’s there were Black power movements, women’s movement and just making us as educator to questions about our cultural pressures, and our social order in the education systems. American students are dealing the dilemma with racism and individualism, while Vietnamese students still are worried about money and how to survive only (it is about $10 to $80 U.S. dollars per month in college life setting). This may seemed cheap for some Americans, but it is very expensive for some Vietnamese. Where in a lesser developing country students are very miserable no matter how high they get. Even if they interested in politics and wanted their voices to be heard, it is really hard to make a different.
In different chapters of Moffatt, he also mentions about how students to balance college and major requirements against the time and space demands of Rutgers and how students learn to get to their classes on time the overcrowded campus bus system somewhat the same as Western. Right now Western, is an example of our economy trying to grow again or expanding. At Western, SATs were always going up, acceptance rates are going up. Moffatt lived the live during the 1978-1979 at Rutgers and believing that the changes from generation to generation in undergraduate student culture and same ideas as the “cultural producing.” In CPEP, the students within the systems discussed that education is not in school, social and culture agenda – how the students are shaping. The production students are not raw materials and it is like the assembly lines to pure learning within the student’s lives.
The third, factor is aspects of student’s life within both systems. I think it is the colleges’ responsibility in creating an accepting environment no matter how different your students are. I believe that their goals are to educate future teachers to becoming culturally sensitive teachers in American Systems. According to the Education Opportunity Act 1974, American shouldn’t be biased against disabled, bilingual students. In my personal observations about disabilities students and believe they all should have the equal opportunity to learn as the normal citizen does. The disable students having harder time to process to information’s as “we equal the normal” students., risk taking is low, visual perception to blaming the victims, oral expression that suffer from Dysnomia, cog-native task which means can’t listen and take notes at the same time.
The key is motivation and it is the most misunderstood concept in education today. As teachers is not being fair to bilingual and disable students and in order to be fair we must treat them different. In CPEP chapter ten, saying that bilingual as neurotic instead of an asset and not highly valued. They weren’t good at either subject. This is something that I can see myself as a bilingual student. I couldn’t find myself as great in math and science like Stevenson discussed but same for English grammar. In result of that reason, I was able to find my own identities. As many Vietnamese-American students, I find myself spilt between the culture of my parents and the cultures of my own generation peers.
Today, living here and be the first generation to go to college in my family and it will allow me to creating new identities that are a hybrid mix of more than one culture. Even though I do agree with (Stevenson) saying, “American parents, teachers and students hold markedly lower standards for academic achievement than do their counterparts in Asia.” I also admire what Stevenson is saying about the responsibilities of American teacher besides teaching us they help us with choosing a career, coach winners, or musical and that is something I didn’t see in Asian teachers while growing up as much as American teachers. In conclusion, in American schools, teachers and students are at the same social level. Students are encouraged to exchange their own opinions and self-expression with the teacher.
United States educational systems are difference in cultures, social order, environments, setting, and the surrounding which means to set students in different structures. While Asian teachers are main focus is on how the students can achieve their goals and dreams versus the ability to achieve in my opinions. Due to the land of opportunity, which is famous for its democratic society and unique culture, American students might forget about their own family values, beliefs, and practices while in schools.
