Question Description

Intersecting Systems

Kimberlé Crenshaw coined the term “intersectionality” and has defined this as “a lens through which you can see where power comes and collides, where it interlocks and intersects. It’s not simply that there’s a race problem here, a gender problem here, and a class or LBGTQ problem there. Many times that framework erases what happens to people who are subject to all of these things” (Crenshaw 2018).

Purpose

For this assignment, you will select a current event or issue from a news source and analyze it from an intersectional perspective. This analysis asks you to take something apart, look at all the pieces, examine how they fit together, and explore the implications.

Directions and Components

Find a news feature or story that expresses an issue, policy, or program that relates to intersecting systems in American society. Example sources for news stories include:Washington Post, National Review, NY Times, Wall Street Journal, Vox, Christian Science Monitor, Huffington Post, or Atlantic, although you may pick a news story from wherever you get your news.

Step 1: Select a news feature on a story the relates to intersecting systems.

Respond to the following questions in your analysis:
o What are the intersecting systems in this situation?o How are they intersecting?
o What is missing from this conversation?
o What is the social impact of it not being said?

Step 2: Write a brief analysis of the news feature.

Please make sure it is double-spaced with 12-point font. You will need to reference and cite one of this week’s readings to situate your analysis within the larger conversation about intersecting systems.

Provide a link to your source in your composition.
