Task:

Students will be required to follow, engage with and analyse – including apply social media analytics to -a community of interest throughout the term, in online forums and social media platforms. The community of interest will focus on a specific event (for example: a news story, a social media phenomenon, a political or commercial campaign) and the analysis will focus on the discourses that flow from this event. A curated selection of this engagement will be published as a Storify post. The Storify will include analysis and critically reflective commentary about the selected community of interest.
As part of this assignment (worth 10% out of the assignment’s total 50% weighting), students will present on the progress of their assignment in one of weeks 10-12 tutorials, which will provide an opportunity for them to receive feedback from their tutor and classmates.  The presentation and analysis should support an argument or conclusion concerning a key aspect of digital media covered during this unit (such as gender, participation,algorithms, digital labour, etc). Students will address focus questions provided on Moodle, and use their chosen example to respond to these questions.

To successfully complete this assignment students are expected to:
1. Identify key markers for the discussion under analysis (hashtags, phrases and terms, headlines, memes, images, videos).
2. Locate, collect, and collate online content.
3. Analyse and show the principal sources, scope and reach of the discourse.
4. Indicate participating agents or antagonists, interests and influence.
5. Analyse content for the following:
A. points of view;
B. points of contention;
C. broader discourses underpinning discussion;
D. style and vernacular characteristic of the community of interest;
E. rhetorical strategies;
F. protocols.
Both quantitative and qualitative approaches to analysis should be used, though in what proportion each is used is up to the individual student.
