The requirement for evidence-based practice is dominant in today’s healthcare, especially in light of recent government policy and international drivers. The need for improved clinical effectiveness dictates that healthcare practitioners respond to the ever-increasing body of knowledge and scientific rationale, in order to practice on a foundation of best available evidence, whilst meeting government and international agendas for clinical governance and greater expectations from patients. This module explores Evidence-Based Practice; the practical skills and knowledge required in searching for the best available evidence and the critical understanding of different sources of evidence, in order to promote and implement clinically effective care and decision making. The focus of this module is on the critical evaluation of evidence and how this evidence can be used to increase clinical effectiveness. It has relevance for all healthcare professionals but is particularly useful for those who have an interest in developing their skills of using research in practice, those who participate in clinical decision making and for students who require grounding in the essential elements of evidence-based practice prior to undertaking a
work based project or service improvement. The Evidence-Based Practice module is a single module (20 credits) which will require 200
hours of student effort over a period over 11 weeks, therefore a commitment to working in your own time is essential if you are to succeed in this module.

2. Demonstrate the ability to critically review and evaluate sources of evidence.
