Value Chain Analysis
Michael Porter was a business researcher who made popular the concept of a “value chain” that is common to most business organizations. Research Porter’s value chain and answer the following questions:
How do organizations attempt to improve their performance through the use of value chain analysis? To what degree is outsourcing consistent with the value chain concept? What have been the impacts of organizations who have engaged in outsourcing in recent years? What is the reason for the resistance that some organizations face when they propose outsourcing some of their key organizational functions to other companies (whether those companies are in this country or a different country)? Give an example of a business or industry that was forced (through competitive pressures) to outsource one or more business functions if they wished to remain competitive.
Justify your answers using examples and reasoning. Comment on the postings of at least two peers and state whether you agree or disagree with their views.

The EOQ Model
The EOQ model is based on a mathematical derivation (with which you would not be expected to be familiar) that achieves a cost minimization between two different types of costs. With this context, answer the following questions:
What two types of costs are being minimized by the EOQ formula? Why does the POQ model differ from the EOQ model (in other words, what circumstances are different in two environments that would use these different models)? If a supplier has a “batch size” or “lot size” restriction, how will that impact the organization’s ability to place orders of the size suggested by the EOQ formula? What will be the effect on costs if an organization fails to order the EOQ in each time period (discuss both the possibility of ordering too much each time an order is placed and the possibility of ordering too little each time an order is placed)? Give an example of an organization that uses the EOQ to determine how much they order each time an order is placed. Cite the source of your example.

Planning
A trading company in the middle ages transported tea, spices, and other oriental products via the overland trade route between the middle east and China. In order to get all the goods transported from China to the middle east, dromedaries (which have one hump), camels (which have two humps), or some combination of the two could be used.

NOTE: You are not expected to solve this problem mathematically.

Answer the following questions:
What would be the nature of the objective function in such an environment? What types of constraints would exist on the number of camels and number of dromedaries? Would it make any sense in this type of environment to have a negative number of camels (in other words, is such a thing realistic)? Why or why not? How would forecasting impact the mix of products that was transported? Describe a company that faces a similar transportation issue in modern times (obviously not using camels and dromedaries), and cite the source from which you learned about the company’s need for such an analysis.

What is the company that you have chosen? What product(s) is being produced that could cause the company to use MRP? Is the company a producer of a high volume of units?
