Descartes and the Buddha present two conflicting
views of the self. Descartes argues that the self is that which thinks, desires, believes, etc.
More generally, the self is where all conscious activity occurs. In contrast, the Buddha
argues that there is no self.
One day you find that you have access to a time machine and decide to hold a debate
between Descartes and the Buddha.
In a creative paper, write a dialogue documenting this debate (the dialogue should read
like a play script). In your dialogue include:
(1) Descartes’ argument that the self is a thinking entity;
(2) Buddha’s argument that there is no self; and
(3) their responses to each other’s argument.

The protagonist Neo is presented with the option of choosing between the blue pill or the
red pill. If Neo takes the blue pill, he returns to a computer-generated simulated reality. If
Neo takes the red pill, he will wake up from this simulated reality and live in
the actual world.
In an essay, first explain Nozick’s arguments against hedonism given in “The Experience
Machine”. Second, in light of Nozick’s thought experiment of the Experience Machine,
discuss whether Neo should take the blue pill or the red pill. Third, explain whether you
think a life of comfort in the Matrix is better or worse than a life of hardship outside of
the Matrix
