1-2 pages in double spaced, 12 point, Times New Roman font (1 full page is the minimum).
The first Secondary Source Analysis Paper required you to discuss two specific readings by Nikole Hannah-Jones and Gordon Wood. For Secondary Source Analysis Paper #2, you will choose a different secondary source reading (not a primary document!) that was handed out in class—either in a previous week or a future one—and summarize it. You may have already posted thoughts on the reading you choose in Discussion Board Forums and, if so, you are welcome to use or adapt some of what you wrote there for this paper.
Readings that are “eligible” for this assignment are as follows: In the Hands of the Great Spirit; Gotham: A History of New York City to 1898; An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States; Coming to America: A History of Immigration and Ethnicity in American Life; The American Age–US Foreign Policy at Home and Abroad, 1750 to the Present; The Fearless Benjamin Lay: The Quaker Dwarf Who Became the First Revolutionary Abolitionist; The Slave’s Cause: A History of Abolition; Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era. Please note that these last two readings won’t be assigned until after the assignment is due so you likely would not choose one of them, but they are still options if you read ahead. If you are summarizing one of the books from which we read multiple chapters, you only need to summarize one chapter (except in the case of The Fearless Benjamin Lay—summarize both chapter). You may not discuss the pieces by Nikole Hannah-Jones or Gordon Wood.
In terms of choosing which reading to write about, you might look ahead to the final paper/project, which will be introduced on April 7th. For that assignment, you will likely be focused in on some aspect of one our units and you will have to bring in a least one secondary source reading from class. If you have some sense of which unit was most interesting to you, it might be a good idea to summarize one of the readings from that unit.
For this assignment, you should be sure to do all of the following.
Summarize the key points made in the chapter (or it may just be part of a chapter).
Make sure to discuss the entire reading, not just the first few pages.
Conclude by explaining (briefly) how this reading better helps us understand US history from the colonial era-1865.
You do not need to cite any sources for this paper—just refer to the reading you are discussing by title (and chapter if applicable). It is also not necessary to consult outside sources (books, articles, web sites, etc.) and indeed I would prefer that you do not do so. The objective of the assignment is to demonstrate that you can summarize work by a historian.
