Explain what they do for you, person from the time period, that you enjoy so much.

Learning Goal: I’m working on a art question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn. What do you think of the rococo? Do you enjoy its sparkling world of pleasure and sensuality? I will admit that I don’t like the rococo. I find it cloying. It’s like eating all the icing from a wedding cake for breakfast, gorging on sugary roses and buttercream swirls until you’re nauseous. It’s like an overproduced advertisement for rich people’s luxury lifestyles.Take this portrait of Madame Pompadour by Francois Boucher. It shows the famous lady putting on her makeup. Her bracelet reveals a cameo portrait of her lover, King Louis XV; it’s a trophy of her sexual conquest worn on her wrist. The painting is an ode to artifice, fashion, and glamour. Madame de Pompadour, like Boucher, uses art/artifice to create a perfectly coiffed image, to seduce the eye and stir desire.Paintings like this one, or Boucher’s even more repellant Girl Reclining: Louise O’Murphy, argue that life is just a game of delectation–at least for the ultra privileged few who can indulge their every desire. This can make the rococo’s sensual artifice seem meretricious to a modern eye.But of course, the paintings weren’t made for a modern eye. They were made for the period eye of the 18th century. They were made for the aristocrats who loved all this frou-frou eye candy. For them, glamorous artifice confirmed their achievements, their entitlements, and the status they felt they so richly deserved. The Period Eye & the Modern SkepticFrom the art historical perspective, the period eye is what matters. Our job in art history is to understand artworks as they were experienced in their original historical context. So for the rococo what matters is the opinion of Madame de Pompadour and her friends, NOT my personal opinion as a 21st century person living in a liberal, post-modern city in a constitutional republic. So this discussion asks you to work with that tension. Post Your Retort To My Disparagement of RococoCreate a post in which you speak in the voice of someone from the 18th century. It could be Madame Pompadour, or Louis XV, Voltaire, or John Locke. Or someone you make up (in which case, tell us about yourself). Refute my argument that the rococo is “cloying,” “eye candy,” or “repellent.” Do this by choosing one or two specific paintings and defending their style and subject matter. Explain what they do for you, person from the time period, that you enjoy so much. Tell us why you choose this painting to demonstrate the value of rococo. Point to specific things in the artwork that you find delightful, wonderful, and meaningful. Use the textbook as a source but translate the authors’ words into your own words, spoken in your fictitious voice from the 18th century.
