Sociology 202
Spring 2022
Semester Paper Assignment
Step 1. Please review the abstracts from the following articles, available on Blackboard:
Coley, Jonathan S. 2020. “Reframing, Reconciling, and Individualizing: How LGBTQ Activist
Groups Shape Approaches to Religion and Sexuality.” Sociology of Religion 81(1): 45-67.
Croll, Paul R., and Joseph Gerteis. 2019. ”Race as an Open Field: Exploring Identity beyond
Fixed Choices.” Sociology of Race and Ethnicity 5(1): 55-69.
De Benedictis, Sara, Shani Orgad, and Catherine Rottenberg. 2019. ”#MeToo, popular feminism
and the news: A content analysis of UK newspaper coverage.” European Journal of
Cultural Studies 22(5-6): 718-738.
Gooch, Kate. 2019. “Kidulthood’: Ethnography, juvenile prison violence and the transition from
‘boys’ to ‘men.” Criminology & Criminal Justice 19(1): 80-97.
Step 2. Based on your precursory review, select one of the articles (preferably, the one that
sounds most interesting to you in either topic or method) and read it in its entirety. This is the
article you will review for the paper. You should take detailed reading notes.
Step 3. Write an essay on the sampling, measurement, and data collection methods used.
Whatever else you do in your essay, please ensure that you answer the following questions:
Background material. What is the research topic? research question? What are the primary
findings of the research as presented in the article?
Sampling method. What is the sampling design used? Why do you think the authors used
this design as opposed to some other design? What problems did they have to deal with
using a sampling design like this one? How did they avoid or tackle these problems?
If you were going to do a research project attempting to answer the same research
question(s), what other sampling design might you use? What problems would you face in
your sampling design choice that the authors didn’t?
Data collection method. What data collection method did the authors use? Why do you
think they chose this method as opposed to some other method? What problems/issues did
they have to deal with using a method like this one?
If you were to do a research project attempting to answer the same research question(s),
what other method might you use? What problems would you face in your methodological
decision that the authors didn’t?
Purpose of the assignment.
You should approach this assignment as an opportunity to demonstrate that you understand
the material presented in the course. However, you should not attempt to demonstrate your
knowledge of every single morsel of information from the course. Instead, you should
selectively apply the most appropriate information, given the approach you’re taking. The idea
is to be thorough but concise.
You needn’t (and probably shouldn’t) answer these questions in the order they are presented.
Rather, you should write an essay that addresses these questions in a thoughtful way in an
order that makes sense to you and for your reader. The organization of the essay is up to you,
but you should make sure that it is organized and readable.
Other important information.
Proofread. Yes, spelling and grammar count. A creative and insightful essay may easily be
marred by poor grammar and organization. The UMB writing center is available to assist you
with these sorts of issues — but you must plan ahead and seek help early.
Length. You should aim for a 5-6 page essay. (Maximum limit is 2000 words.) You should use
12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced pages with 1-inch margins. Do not doublespace header information (name, date, etc.) You do not need a title or a cover page.
Citations. You should make sure to state early in the essay which article you’re reviewing.
Where appropriate (after quotations, very important points), you should refer to the page
number from your selected article, although the year of publication is unnecessary. In-line
citations should list authors’ names and a page number (Adler et al., 172) unless the sentence in
which the citation falls mentions the authors’ names, in which case the citation should include
only a page number.
Where appropriate, you should cite course readings by using an in-line citation including name
and year (e.g., Gray et al. 2007). You need not do any additional reading for this assignment
other than those on the syllabus and your selected article for review. You do not need to include
a bibliography. If you have questions about how cite references properly, refer to the ASA Style
Guide at: http://www.asanet.org/documents/teaching/pdfs/Quick_Tips_for_ASA_Style.pdf
Plagiarism. Please review the section on the syllabus on plagiarism. If you have questions
about how to cite or quote appropriately, please refer to the Chicago Manual of Style or a similar
academically-oriented writing guide.
