Paper specifications:The paper will be up to five pages long. It will use Times New Roman font type; 11 or 12 point font size; 1” margins on all four sides; page numbers in either upper right corner OR at bottom and centered; one and a half OR double spaced lines. All references in text and reference section are to be in APA format according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th Edition).
The paper must rely upon (a) the original book or journal article that was summarized in the Forty Studies that Changed Criminal Justice text (for which you were tasked with replicating) and (b) a minimum of six additional peer reviewed sources – i.e., articles in scholarly journals and/or law review articles. Failure to rely upon the original book or journal article as specified in (a) will result in an automatic five point penalty. For every peer reviewed source you are below the minimum, you will lose two points (e.g., four peer reviewed sources = four point penalty). You are advised to have more sources.
Paper structure:You are to provide a cover/title page with the following information: (a) paper title; (b) your name; (c) the course name and number; and (d) the date the paper was submitted to me. This cover page does not count towards the page limit.
On the next page and under the heading “Introduction” you will have an introductory paragraph that starts by telling your reader as concisely as possible what your topic is. In the same paragraph, you are to tell your reader why this topic is worth study – that is, what is so special about your topic? This paragraph must not go beyond one-half of the page.
Directly below the last sentence of your introductory paragraph, you will have the heading “The Original Study”. In this one page section you are to summarize the Forty Studies that Changed Criminal Justice reading assigned to you: describe the major study questions and/or hypotheses, how the original study author(s) conducted their study (i.e., their methodology) and the major study findings.
Directly below the last sentence of the section above you will have the heading “Literature Review”. In this section, you are to provide your reader with a literature review that is no more than four pages long.
You are to describe what the literature says about the topic between publication of the original study and today. What are the major theoretical frameworks? What have the prior studies found (e.g., in terms of research hypotheses, support for or rejection of theory)? Give your reader a concise overview of the relevant literature. Anytime you rely upon someone else’s work, you are to provide proper citations in the main text (for e.g., Gordon & Wood, 2005, p. 1).
At the end of your literature review and in new paragraph, you are to state your formal research hypotheses. You are to specify the null hypothesis (or hypotheses) and the alternative hypothesis (or hypotheses). Whether you use directional or non-directional hypotheses will be determined by your literature review.
On a new page and under the heading “References”, you are to provide full APA formatted references for all sources cited in your paper. Any citation in your text will be fully referenced here; do not provide references if you did not cite them in the text. The reference section does not count towards the paper’s page limit.
Notes: Submitting a one, two, or three page paper (not including the cover page and reference section) will result in a baseline grade that is no higher than 18 out of 25. That is, only under the best of circumstances will such a paper receive an 18 out of 25. Though there is a five page maximum, higher quality papers are anywhere from four to five pages long: the maximum page limit is meant to get you to work on writing concisely.
You are to rely heavily upon academic sources (e.g., academic books and journals) and properly cite your sources in the text and provide the full references in a reference/bibliography. Citations and the reference section must be in APA format based upon the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 7th Edition.
Keep in mind that you may be asked to produce a physical copy of one or more of your sources (e.g., the actual book you cited in your work); you may also be instructed to indicate in writing the sources used in the text. Failure to comply with such requests result in an automatic zero on the assignment and may be treated as evidence of academic dishonesty.
Points will be deducted for excessive use of quotes, poor grammar and poor sentence structure, and typos. You will also lose points for failing to follow other written paper specifications.
Quotes: You are permitted up to five quotes throughout the paper, the combined length of the quoted material is not to exceed eight lines (a line ≠ sentence; a line is the line of text on the printed page). For e.g., you have two quotes that take up eight lines in the paper: you have reached your quota of quotable material. Or you have five quotes which take up four lines of quoted material in which case you have reached your quota of quotable material. For each instance that you exceed your quota you will automatically lose one (1) point; if you exceed both the permitted numbers of quotes and lines, you will be penalized based on whichever exceeds the quota the most (e.g., you have 7 quotes and 15 lines of quoted text: you will lose 7 points).
Poor grammar, poor sentence structure, poor paragraph structure, and typos: The more writing errors, the lower your grade. As each person’s paper has varying writing errors, the “totality of circumstances” will dictate the extent to which your grade is impacted by these errors.
Other written paper specifications: Points will be deducted for failure to conform to the other written term paper specifications (regarding e.g., margin sizes; number of peer reviewed sources; APA formatted citations). For each instance that you do not conform to these specifications you will lose one (1) point.
