The Southern colonies included Virginia, Maryland, South Carolina, North
Carolina, and
Georgia. They were first settled
by Europeans making most of the people in the Southern
colonies English. However, there
were also some groups of Scots and Germans (Corbett et al.,
2014). The settlement was driven
by the Europeans seeking economic prosperity that they lacked
in Old England. There was more
space in the U.S. unlike in England where estates were only
passed down to the eldest sons.
As a result, most settlers ventured into farming when they
reached the U.S. Also, some of
the people were escaping the religious persecution they faced in
England. The first religion to
enter the colonies was the Roman Catholic that first settled in
Maryland in 1634. Years later,
protestants such as Presbyterians, Quakers, and Baptists started
arriving in the colonies and
established their churches. The Roman Catholic welcomed other
religions into the Southern
colonies. It made the Southern colonies a region of diverse religions.
The Middle colonies
included New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York.
The middle colonies were similar
to the Southern colonies because they both had fertile land for
farming that attracted settlers
to live in them (Corbett et al., 2014). They also supported religious
freedom. People settled in New
Jersey, New York, and Delaware to make them trade centers
while Pennsylvania was meant to
be where Quakers would settle. Quakers were the people that
founded the Middle colonies after
being persecuted in England and fleeing to the U.S. Middle
colonies were also a hub of
diversity as they had Germans, Dutch, Swedes, French, Native
Americans, and some African
slaves. It also had people from different religions such as
Presbyterians, Lutherans, Dutch
Calvinists, and Mennonites. Therefore, there was no dominance
of one religion in the Middle
colonies.
